Well I finally got closure today. The store manager called today and apologized for yesterday's episode. He did say that John Deere had told them to begin to get rid of the X-Mark things and that is probably where the confusion came from. Anyway, after several minutes of searching and "yes we have them" and then "no we don't" the final word is the blade is a standard thread (lefty loosy, righty tighty) and that a set of 3 blades is $47 and no they do not have them but can get them. He gave a part #WP1881KT
When I do a search on JD Parts, it comes up as a bush hog blade. guess thats close enough

I have no doubt that an impact wrench will take them off no problem. It's really hard sometimes to hold/block a blade and get a socket/pipe on there. I've never seen a blade bolt that even my el cheap $25.00 impact wouldn't take off. Even one's that haven't been off in years.

Maybe you could ask the dealer to have their service truck (with air tools) take these off for you as a courtesy. That first time can be tough, and then you can put them back on.

I agree with air tools, but a 24"x1/2" breaker bar should work just fine. Sometimes air tools aren't close enough or worth firing up. Cresent wrench is a non-starter...:D

And not that it's really applicable here, but I broke down and bought a torque multiplier ($200 at NT) a few months back - very cool. Use it for changing hitch balls - 600 ft-lbs is nothing for it...

Wow, timely subject to me. My GM1060E has one season of mowing on it - I bought 3 spares at the end of last season, with the plan to pull and change them out. Well the anxiety monster got me on it, and had not done it yet. I even already have mowed once. This thread tells me I was right to fear it being a pain. My manual does not mention what direction thread. It does mention that the blades spin counter clockwise looking at them from the bottom. And the blades were more in the area of 75.00 for all 3 (from JD dealer). Bush hog blades are entirely different from the grooming mowers. I could try to find my order and get the blade # from that.

I recall when I bought my set up, one dealer inferred phase out of Frontier. I really think it was a margin thing and they wanted to sell something else with more profit - same dealer would only give very small discount on quote.

I am still trying too figure if the gear box oil is checked and filled from the breather port - the only thing I can see. No detail on how to check or fill in the manual. It does say 103 ft lb for blade torque though.

Jack,
I think the mower you have and the one I have are essentially the same, yours is just the larger version and probably newer. I read through my manual a few minutes ago and as with yours, there is no mention of what direction the threads should turn. It does mention the 103 ft lbs of torque though. If you don't mind, if you could get the part number off your order I would appreciate it. I have YET to find the blades on JD Parts website. The part number in the manual is BP000-6795, but nowhere on JD's site can I find reference to anything like that. When I do a search by Manufacturer, Frontier isn't even an option. I've heard that this is really a Woods mower with green paint on it, but the Woods numbers don't match up either. I'm totally disgusted with my local dealer at this point.

Oh and the tool problem is solved. My neighbor across the road owns a tire dealership and had pity on me today. He offered up any sort of air tool I could possibly need. Now I just need the stinkin blades  Short term fix, but Father's Day is coming soon :D

Jack, your mower is the same as mine just smaller. Blades rotate the same direction (counterclockwise) and mine has normal right hand threads (lefty loosey). Mine came off very easily using an impact gun.

I also changed my gearbox oil last night, I do believe the only way to do it is through the fill hole. I sucked out the old and filled with new. The stuff that came out was the consistancy of THICK cream, and was about that color too. I'll run it for awhile then change it again to make sure I've got a clean fill.

Birdmayon:

Except for some specialty oils, oil that is the color of cream has water beaten into it. If so, this can be a serious problem. You may have a bad seal or gasket.
