I 've been accessing Gmail through a white icon that looked like an envelope with a red stripe outlining the bottom of the flap. This worked well and I was satisfied.
Yesterday, the icon was replaced by an M in four colors that took me to a slow apparently resource hungry version of Gmail that I didn't like. I was just getting used to it when the multicolored M disappeared and things are back to normal. If anyone knows what's going on please explain it to me.

Are you using their webmail or a separate email program like Thunderbird or Outlook? The webmail shouldn't be any more resource-hungry than any other website.

As far as I now, I'm using straight gmail. The multicolored icon even came up when I typed gmail into a search engine.

Oaktree,
As I think about it, I believe the white and red envelope is a separate email program. I'll check Amazon Apps and see if I got it there. My Amazon Kindle tablet doesn't like me using any apps but the ones they sell or give away.

MossRoad,
Thank you. The info at the link tells what I wanted to know. If the new logo returns, switching to HTML makes it near enough to the old logo's format to suit me and my slow tablet.

Oaktree,
According to the info at the link Moss Road provided, I must have been wrong about the multicolored logo being an app from another party. Thanks for your help.

My gmail has gotten incredibly slow. If someone sends me an email mid afternoon, I'll probably get it mid morning tomorrow. I've assumed that it was just my ISP (Spectrum) but I really don't know. I still have our health insurance through the City of Dallas and when I signed up this year by phone, the person I was talking to said he'd send me an email confirmation. I never got it, so after a week, I called and got a different person, but he assured me that all was good, then also told me that they've had lots of problems with gmail and that was probably the reason I didn't receive a confirmation. For whatever reason, I sure wish it would get fixed.

You might want to check your setting on gmail as to when and how often it checks for new mail. On a home computer, you can have it checking all the time, but on something like a cell phone with bad battery issues like my old iPhone6, I have it check only when I'm on a WIFI network so it isn't out there trying to check over the weak cell signal over and over.

One way I speed up my tablet is to use a feature of my third party file manager or antivirus to remove the junk files that are wasting space in memory. This also temporarily eliminates some of the strange things my tablet does.

Didn't realize you were using a tablet, assumed it was a PC. I have zero experience with smartphones/tablets.

I use Win7 for Gmail and still have the colored M but it has made absolutely no difference in performance of Gmail. I use Brave as a browser.

I have three different email providers on three different browsers. Long ago I gave up relying on just one. I've never tried Gmail.

As with everything else, moving to more of a bandwidth sponge... I like the idea of using the HTML version, I might do that... I've been using Gmail since it came out basically when you had to be invited after I realized I would lose my college based email after I graduated... With one unit of internet I do NOT have the bandwidth necessary for most modern websites...

I'm with the rest of the planet where Gmail should have been left alone, it worked fine, it doesn't need to completely reload everything when I switch back to that tab, I've left a Gmail tab open on my browser for years and it normally just sits there now it reloads when I click on it half the time...
