What was you experience with Dog rescues?

We adopted our current dog Kali from a kill shelter in LA 4 years ago January. She was picked up on New Year’s Day with no collar or chip. This place had 5 large buildings full of dogs. The conditions were terrible and smelled worse.

We happened to go there during one of the worst storms of the year and they would not allow you to socialize with the dogs, only look at them in their kennels.

My wife had gone online to preview available dogs and had selected 5 possible candidates. When we got there I think 3 of the 5 had already been adopted, most were young dogs. Kali was listed as 9 years old by their vet. When I saw her, she came to the gate with her head down and was sick (kennel cough). I stuck my fingers through the fence and gave her a few scratches and we some how connected.

I looked at my wife and said “ she talked to me and told me that she was going home with us”. My wife did not disagree but I think she wondered about my “conversation”.

I went to the office and filled out the paperwork for the adoption. Normally they did not release dogs that were not spayed but given her age and condition they waived that requirement, charged me an additional $50 fee that was supposed to be refunded when I provided proof of spay. They never did even though I submitted the proof.

We took her to our vet ASAP for treatment and with prescribed meds she soon recovered. Our vet put her age at 7.

Now since she “talked” to me and I was the one that led her out of the shelter, she is my Velcro dog. On the way home we stopped at a McDonald's and I got her a bare hamburger which she wolfed down. That sealed the Velcro dog!

I think that if we had not adopted her given her age and illness, she would have been euthanized within a couple of days.

Bottom line is that she has been the perfect dog, but now approaching 11 to 13 years old I’m hoping for a few more years.
What a beautiful big girl!

We have fostered more than 200 dogs over the years. Some for as little as a few days, others for a couple months. Most were English setters - failed hunting dogs, but we fostered so many different breeds (including everything from pit bulls, Rottweilers and Dobermans to Papillions and yorkies).

We stopped fostering when our own dogs were getting to old to deal well with so many new dogs coming and going. When ours had all died, we got another from a rescue group. A ten year old golden mix. Sweetest thing you ever saw, already trained, walked well on a leash, friendly, but overly so, to everyone and so on.

ADOPT a dog, save a life, gain a companion.

There is a local "rescue" of non dogs where the owner makes volunteers sign a NDA(Non Disclosure Agreement) which I find questionable and interesting...

General rule of thumb is people are people, no matter where you go.

Another general rule of thumb is that when volunteer organizations start up, over time, the original intent of the organization tends to lose it way over time.

Another general rule is the larger the organization becomes, the chances that it "loses it way" per the reason why the organization originally started increases with bigger money and possible "high dollar" salaries with the people involved with that organization.

Nature of the beast...

Don't think you will find anyone who loves animals more than my wife and I, yet we refuse to give to this organization

The wife and I volunteer at the local spca. We have for over 20 years. We also choose the spca as our charity of choice to the tune of $2500 a year. We have had several rescue dogs and a cat from there. The issue I have is that you must spay or neuter in order to adopt. I agree with this policy but they make you do this to dogs to young like 2 months old. A male dog should be aloud to go untill at least 9 months old and preferably 1 year. Also, you can get dogs with issues because of previous owners. We had one female German Shepherd that was very aggressive. We now have a boxer who was beaten so bad that his head is slightly deformed. You simply cannot pet him on the top of his head! We deal with this kind of stuff because these animals deserve better from there humans. Just be patient and the reward will far outweighs the cost!!

As far as money to the ASPCA, we donate directly to our local agency so we know the money goes to them not some big fake charity.

Amazon has a charity feature called AmazonSmile. They donate based on your purchases and it costs you nothing. I set it up to donate to the ASPCA then later changed it to donate to the local county shelter.

No different than the NRA and your local grass roots effort IMO :ROFLMAO: Take a look at the president of that (NRA) organization.

Nothing wrong with making money, just don't like it when you make that much and your looking for handouts from me.
