I am buying a JD 5403 left over and the dealership is giving me the option of a JD 553 or a 522 loader

Which is the one to go with

Also what is the difference between a "collar" and a "synchronized" shift

The 553 is a more capable loader. Greater capacities. More expensive, as well. If the price is pretty close - go the bigger lift!

A snychro tranny allows you to shift without stopping the tractor. The collar shift allows you to "hear" the gears everytime you shift... there's a bit of gear noise - grinding - typically even if you stop. It gets easier the more you get to know the tractor and transmission, though.

The synchro is definitely a better option - IMO.

For much loader work I'd definitely pick the syncro-shift trans. i hate to hear gears grinding when a tractor is changing directions.

Check if either loader's front torque tube blocks the headlights. I think this was a problem with the 520/540 loaders. Make sure which one you pick has park stands, they were an option at one time, may be std now.

I second the one with the most lift capacity.
