Purchasing an M5660SUHD and don't want to spend a ton of money on a rotary cutter (Bush Hog). Looking at Tennessee River or Titan which are 30 minutes away but open to other suggestions.

What size is appropriate for a 50PTO hp tractor? We pulled a Deere HX10 with our 5065E and it had to be full power to even get it turning or else it would stall the tractor. I don't want to be in that situation again.

I was thinking an 7' heavy duty single spindle or is that too much blade to turn? IIRC multiple gearboxes are actually easier to turn than a single shaft on bigger cutters. I just don't need anything bigger than a 7' and a multi gearbox unit costs significantly more.

This will be used in the hills of Tennessee and if a 6' is better I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Guido

8ft twin spindle. Takes less effort to turn than the single 7ft.

Looks to be 37 PTO HP, 5HP per foot of bush hog is what I go by..

It's a 50 PTO HP Tractor. I think 5hp a foot is a good number but in my previous experience an HX10 required a lot more than that!

Would a 6' be way overpowered? I'm not bushhogging 50 acres of ground just 5-10 every once in awhile.

I see that now, should spin a 7 footer pretty nicely..

your owners manual will give you the max size/wt implement for your tractor. having said that, i would personally recommend a HD 6' hog. weight of the brush hog would be of primary consideration for safety issues on slopes. an 8' twin (unless pull type) would be in my book out of the question. my 3ph 8'twin 3ph weighs in @ 2000#, far too heavy for your model tractor tho there are lighter ones available.

7' single spindle hogs are imho an odd size to be avoided. with blades that size a lot of impact vibration w/rocks, etc
personally, i'd go with heavy duty 6'. stick with heavy duty model

My rear lift is north of 3,000lbs and the twin spindle I’m looking at is around 1,400lbs.

The tractor weight is right around 6k with the loader.

1,400lbs seems manageable on the 3 point but maybe I’m missing something?

Thanks for your input!

As stated a 7' BH is kind of an odd-ball;a six foot medium duty will work fine(I have a LandPride on 44 h.p. and it works well).

good point keeping in mind that your model specs rate that wt at the rear arms axis? please correct me. it all becomes a different equation when that weight is extended as in a brush hog. add slopes, it intensifies. but your dealer or owners manual should answer these questions.
fortunately our market gives us lots of options. wise of you to explore them here. best regards
of course you could also ballast your fel just for safety & you should be fine w/that 8' set up :)
