Hi, What size bush hog would work best on a Kubota L3010 a 5 or 6 footer? I have already put money down on a Woods BB60 cutter but I could swith it to the BB72. The land around here is flat and most of what I'll be cutting is stuff that will be cut atleast once a year. BTW I bought the Woods BB60 with slip clutch for 925.00 They want 1125.00 for the BB72

Thanks
Jack

Jacl,
Totally depends on what you will be cutting. If mostly grass/weeds then a 6 footer will work. If however, you are getting into brush, small trees, or thick heavy weeds, then you will want a 5'. I have a 5' one for my L3010 and it is about all (and more when into brush) that my tractor wants. I'd recommend a 5' and just spend a bit more time. It'll be better on the tractor, and you would actually be able to have a higher groundspeed, which will help to offset the narrower track.

Jack,
I agree with Nick. I wouldn't want to pull a bush hog bigger then 5' with my L3010. Of course you could always get the 6' and just take smaller 5' "bites" if you have trouble cutting 6'.

Jack, I have both a 5' and 6' and have tried both on my L3010. The 6' goes on for field mowing grass that is no higher than 2.5'(using med gear) I use the 5' for mowing the hills, really tall grass and woods. When using the 5' in a field you will be tempted to use high gear which is not very advisable. I found a load of oil pipe someone had dumped in our front overgrown field, needless to say I had to walk back and get the truck to winch the tractor back upright.

I agree with the prior posts (well, all but flipping the tractor - just thinking about it causes angina). I've a L3410 GST, so same frame but up to 5-6 horses if you have a HST. I've the Woods BB600 (they say "medium duty" - it's a tank) at 60", and I've had to slow down to a crawl or cut with only 1/2 to 2/3 of the cutter into the rough when things were dense. I'm talking 2-3" sapplings, dense brush, etc. You can't keep the rpm up any other way in the tough stuff (your engine is trying to turn the wheels through dense underbrush, and also turn the pto fast enough to assure decent cutting). For tall grass or weeds that aren't wet - hey, whatever - a 72" mower or light duty brush cutter work well, and you can move forward at a decent clip (no pun intended).
Note that greasing the fittings on either ends of the shaft between the Woods brush cutter and the pto requires taking off the plastic shield (they don't tell you that in the manual - but just try getting a grease nozzle near the fittings any other way). It's no big deal - an extra minute or 2 - but I wasted a frustrating 10 minutes trying the follow the printed directions.

Just a small whoops, some dumb___ got rid of 18 pieces of 3 inch heavy wall oilfield pipe( really nice to build stuff with) plus their trash. I hit the pipe pile at an angle and she laid over real nice but scared the heck outa me. Guess it comes from my practice in the jeep that the seatbelt was fastened, hands stayed on the wheel and egine was shut off immediately. I've only rolled the jeep 3 times now

I bought a 6' Brush Hog brand medium duty with a clutch to pull behind my previously owned L4610 without FEL that has just been replaced by an L48. The front end of the tractor got light on any uphill stretch. With the L48 I believe we will be in good shape without having to ballast the front bucket.

Our land, in places, is rocky, and our old light duty brush hog blew out pins three times a day at 15 minutes a pin to replace.

I may be preaching to the converted, but it is important to run the PTO at the recommended RPM to keep the blade running at the right speed. Too slow, as I found out, will let the blades of the brush hog deflect back into the brush hog deck and you get big circular grooves that don't look very good and enable rust to get a foothold.
