What kind of wood is this?

And I'll bet it's dead, too

I'm not going to argue with that!:D

It also appears to be cut to length and ready for splitting.:D

Since he said he does not remember any pine trees in that area, you would think he would remember cutting down a pine, wouldn't you?

Oh, I missed that somehow. Oops. Well, maybe it's a beech in disguise. I'm "stumped"

After reading the comments here and looking at the bark picture keegs posted I think it has to be sassafras. Except for a few cedars that have appreared in other parts of the property there are no pines or other coniferous trees around. Funny thing is I have no recollection of cutting it down.

Thanks for helping out.

O.K. Here are some pictures of my sassafras that I took in my basement about 2 hours ago. Looks pretty similar. Yes? ;)

I've burnt that wood before. I wasn't a real big fan of it. Seemed to burn really fast and not hold a fire real well. I never knew what it was until now. Thanks for the post Rob. Did it have an distinct odor to it? I remember it smelling like soap

Yeah. I've been stalking that one for about 18 years. When it was young I kept letting it go until the next year, hoping it would develop a bigger rack. My patience paid off a couple years ago when it developed a non-standard rack, probably after an injury in a fight. I finally got my chance in the spring and on opening day I nailed it. It was a clean wound, but I wanted to give it a chance to bleed out, so I let it lay until September. It didn't go too far and I was able to locate it right away. I think it field dressed at about 60' but I'm probably just hyped up with adrenaline and it will most likely come in at 45. :D

Our sassafras burns nice and hot. It pops a lot. However, it is a softer wood and the dried pieces are very light weight. It burns up very quickly. Even on the low setting in our stove, it will burn a full load up in 4 hours. I get about 6 hours out of our cherry and oak. I get about 8 hours out of our locust. The only reason I harvested it is because I wanted those sassafras tress out of that area.
