What kind of oil for a PHD

I checked the level of oil in the gearbox on my post hole digger last weekend and noticed it was little low, (nothing serious), but it made me realize that I don't know what type of oil it uses.

I suspect it would be a gear oil similar to what is used in a truck rear end, but must admit I don't really know. Can someone tell me what it is, type and viscosity?

You're right, Jack, gear oil. I don't know what specific weight yours recommends, but would guess a 90W, however, in view of the normal temperatures in your area, I wouldn't hesitate to use the 85W-140 myself. Purely personal opinion, of course.

I think Bird is right on the money. Unless your documentation shows anything different like short fiber grease.. or pourable grease.. go with a gear oil.

Even outboard 85/140... If it is low.. do you see any leaks.. or has it been a real gradual loss.

Soundguy, thanks for your input, I have not noticed a leak, I just checked it and it was alittle low. Must be a really gradual loss.

At the risk of sounding like a 'know-it-all' (which I certainly am not!) keep in mind that your PHD gear box is probably not intended to be full of lube or even close to full. Most gear boxes should be about 1/2 full to prevent blowing out the seal. There was this friend of mine who made that very mistake. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
