We are farming between 5 and 600 acres in total spread out over 50 miles of two lane mountain roads. I call it truck farming and it's why we have so much equipment. I had a friend from the coast who is a big time farmer spend the day with me up here a couple of years ago. We rode and looked all day and when we finished I asked him what he thought. QUOTE. "Ya'll are crazy!" We have a niche and we fill it just fine!

This may be a little off topic... but:thumbsup:

Just getting started as a retired member of the military who wants to do more farming. I have 100 acres but most is not tillable (maybe 15 acres which is still in timber). Mostly now it is used for family deer and turkey hunting. I am trying to decide what I want to grow besides clover, turnips, winter wheat, sunflowers, etc. which is for the wildlife.

I've got an MX5100 with FEL, 6' rotary tiller, box blade and rotary cutter. Is there anything to grow for any kind of profit other than the above and brush piles for the wildlife in south central Virginia? I know that is the big question.

Thanks for your suggestions.

My first thought would be any vegetable or fruit crop that you can retail on location if possible. Create a family/farm environment and people will come. I have friends who make a GOOD living out of a road side farm market. Wave of the future!

Great topic. I would also suggest you add how many acres you are working and if this is your primary income. I believe many of the CUT owners with fervor would like to know the realities.

I was raised in N. Illinois farm country. Corn and Soy Beans pretty much dominate the crops there. I know, I could never afford to invest in what it would take to farm full time there.

Yep.... that's the way it was when I was growin' up! Times change. People aren't nearly as sensitive about that stuff, nowadays.

Folk's are gonna be envious or jealous or resentful - OR NOT - no matter what you tell 'em.

30 acres. About 15 in timothy hay. Vegetables. Honey bees. (I make a little money from these enterprises.)

Horses, chickens, and a couple of pigs every other year or so. (No money in these.)

Still clearin' trees and cuttin' firewood -that I mostly give away.

JD 110 TLB, Ford 9N and soon JD 5065M. All the stuff you need for haying, etc.

I never new it was rude to ask a farmer how many cows he milked until last summer. I was doing some carpenter work for a dairy farmer and I asked him three times how many cows he was milking and each time he replied " a barn full". I didn't get until now. Now I understand. He wouldn't think about asking me how much money I had in my savings account.
