Don't worry MarkV, I doubt that anyone here was offended. I was debating whether to tell you the rules of etiquette that I learned as a child, but another poster got to it first. This board is not like the farming and ranching communities of years past. The diversity of professions, hence knowledge, is so great that most seem to tolerate what would have been unthinkable at the sale barn in 1955.

By the way, what is EWG?

Attitudes have mellowed with time regarding any questions about acres or number of cattle, etc.

'Course folk's won't likely give you a straight answer right off, either! If they recognize you're genuinely trying to learn something - they'll run you 'round the pasture a time or two before they'll own up to what they actually do for a living!!

I can see why it would. I just typed in my zipcode and can't believe it. I see some people are listed seperately husband/wife then listed under the farm name. There's millions of dollars being shown here.
Folks this just aint right. WTF is going on here?

Mid TN, 150 acres - half open. Just got into it this year but raised on dairy in PA. I managed to get fields in decent enough shape to get some decent hay last summer. Hoping to start cows on part this year when I get fencing fixed. For profit? Lol. First, I'm not that good of a farmer and second, my full time job sucks 10-12 hour days. I love farming and want my kids to at least appreciate it. Haying in 95 heat is better for my kids than play station at 72. Hardest part is wanting to do better for the land and wildlife but running out of time and money. I have JD 5300 w/ fel, Woods Hog, Few other hay, ground, and homemade things. Looking to move up to a 5085/95M soon as I sell the other place. I really would feel better w/ 4wd on some of these hills. The farm I bought wasn't taken care of so there is still years ahead just healing it. Thanks to all that post here. A lot of good info. I bet a lot of farmers don't have time to visit sites. They are too busy trying to eck out a living feeding the rest of the world. I find it ironic we have to pay $4 diesel and practically giveaway food to the Saudis. Some things just don't make sense.

Well I was the one that ask the question and I surely intended no offense to anyone. I don't recall that being a thing where I was raised. My intentions were to give a better perspective of what it took to be a full time farmer. Many join the forum with the dream and no understanding of the reality.

I've never come across this big secrecy issue must be an area related thing . Seems all farmers want to do is compare and see who lost the most money every year here ?

we're in ct 55ac, beef cattle,hay, garden and i have a small maple syrup operation. we have a bunch of older equipment jdh, jd50,jd2010, a cut jd790, case backhoe, and older haying equipment.
