I remember pop bottle rocket fights and m80 grenades then when it wasn't 4th of july the ole dirt clod fights wow how did no one get hurt?
Well, they did get hurt...
I think we were 8 and the bigger kids wanted to take our fort. They bombed us with dirt clods and one had a rock in it. The little girl that lived across the street from me got hit in the head. I had to walk her home with blood pouring down her shirt and pants and all over the street. They had to take her to the hospital.
Also, one of my older sisters had a best friend when she was about 10-12 years old. She got killed hitting plastic golf balls in her back yard. Another kid swung at a ball and she was too close. She got hit in the temple and died instantly.
Half a dozen kids drown in the lake behind my house over the 24 years I lived there. All but one died trying to swim across the lake. 1 died walking on the ice and falling through.
My friends and I were shooting fat pencils out of a 1/2" pipe mortar powered by firecrackers. Drop in the lit firecracker, drop in the fat pencil and watch it launch over the high tension power lines. A short fuse sent a pencil through, and I mean THROUGH my friend's hand. I think we were 14 or so when that happened. I had to take him up to his mom with a bloody, burnt black hand with very dark red blood coming out of it.
That same friend and I were playing on a rope swing in the lake. His hand got caught in the rope and he returned to the tree.... face first. Then he fell off the rope, tumbled down the steep bank and ripped his ribs open on a submerged log. I had to take him to his mom all bloody again.
I saw a kid stick a hatchet through his hand at boy scout camp.
I saw a kid blow three of his fingers off with a cherry bomb on the fourth of July.
And I saw a teenager run and dive into shallow water and snap his neck. He's now a quadriplegic. That reminded me that I also arrived home shortly after another teenager dove into the same lake and hit his head on a submerged pipe. He is also a quadriplegic now.
The kid across the street took out his own front teeth tossing a baseball up in the air and catching it. He missed. The other kid across the street got his teeth knocked out by his dad at Little League practice.
Heck, I remember climbing a tree, grabbing a branch and swinging my legs up on it... then hearing a CRACK!!! What a thud I made from 15' landing flat on my back. I remember them carrying me away on a stretcher, then waking up at home where I spent several days in bed before I could move again. OUCH!!!
