What kind of dangerous toys did you have?

I remember pop bottle rocket fights and m80 grenades then when it wasn't 4th of july the ole dirt clod fights wow how did no one get hurt?

Well, they did get hurt...

I think we were 8 and the bigger kids wanted to take our fort. They bombed us with dirt clods and one had a rock in it. The little girl that lived across the street from me got hit in the head. I had to walk her home with blood pouring down her shirt and pants and all over the street. They had to take her to the hospital.

Also, one of my older sisters had a best friend when she was about 10-12 years old. She got killed hitting plastic golf balls in her back yard. Another kid swung at a ball and she was too close. She got hit in the temple and died instantly.

Half a dozen kids drown in the lake behind my house over the 24 years I lived there. All but one died trying to swim across the lake. 1 died walking on the ice and falling through.

My friends and I were shooting fat pencils out of a 1/2" pipe mortar powered by firecrackers. Drop in the lit firecracker, drop in the fat pencil and watch it launch over the high tension power lines. A short fuse sent a pencil through, and I mean THROUGH my friend's hand. I think we were 14 or so when that happened. I had to take him up to his mom with a bloody, burnt black hand with very dark red blood coming out of it.

That same friend and I were playing on a rope swing in the lake. His hand got caught in the rope and he returned to the tree.... face first. Then he fell off the rope, tumbled down the steep bank and ripped his ribs open on a submerged log. I had to take him to his mom all bloody again.

I saw a kid stick a hatchet through his hand at boy scout camp.

I saw a kid blow three of his fingers off with a cherry bomb on the fourth of July.

And I saw a teenager run and dive into shallow water and snap his neck. He's now a quadriplegic. That reminded me that I also arrived home shortly after another teenager dove into the same lake and hit his head on a submerged pipe. He is also a quadriplegic now.

The kid across the street took out his own front teeth tossing a baseball up in the air and catching it. He missed. The other kid across the street got his teeth knocked out by his dad at Little League practice.

Heck, I remember climbing a tree, grabbing a branch and swinging my legs up on it... then hearing a CRACK!!! What a thud I made from 15' landing flat on my back. I remember them carrying me away on a stretcher, then waking up at home where I spent several days in bed before I could move again. OUCH!!! :)

Moss is right.....kids did get hurt. Adults got hurt too. I grew up behind the parts counter at my dad's implement biz....and got to know a good many farmers with missing hands or limbs or digits. Lots of these were lost to a PTO or other accidents which are now prevented by safety gear.

We made a lot of fun outta some things which were not too safe....but from that we also learned "how stuff works" and gained some common sense .....which is in short supply today.

When i was 15 i built a 87 camaro strictly for street racing. it had an all aluminum 383 (stroked 350) backed by a stout turbo 400, 4.56 gears in a ford 9 inch. the motor dynoed 682 hp @ the flywheel. this was my daily driver. no roll cage, full interior, no fire extinguisher, no a/c. the one time i went to the track it ran a 10.46 w/ traction problems and i was "politely" asked to leave and not come back until i put a cage in it. this was in the early 90's, when 10's was a big deal, especially on the street. my parents hated the car, but i bought and built it with my own money cutting 10 lawns a week. well, the car got a nasty reputation on the streets. not many people wanted to race it. one night, i ran a guy in a t-top vette and put it on him pretty good, about 15 car lengths. we parked and after a few minutes he pulled off and his passenger stood up out the ttop shooting the bird at everyone. they pulled out in front of two motorcycles racing. one bick hit the back of the vette and took the passengers head off as it flew over the top of the car. the bike rider and the passenger were killed instantly. i went home and put the car up for sale. i bought a nice reg cab stepside chevy w/ a V6 and built a 70 chevelle strictly for the track. after that, my street racing career came to an abrupt end. before this incident, between riding in and driving cars, i was involved in over 200 street races. never again

Yaeh, a car is about as dangerous a toy as you can get, if you consider the power, weight, etc.... plus, it affects other people, not just you and me. Sad story.

NICE POSTS but the worst toys I ever had were found in the kitchen. One day I wanted to make pop corn and thought that bottle was one serving and what was better for making things than Mom's pressure cooker.
Needless to say I blew the glass top into the ceiling and the thing danced around on the stove like it was alive. I took it outside and left it there for days before I told my Mom.

1947 and counting
