I wonder why they called him lefty?

 Good question!

Found this:

"Frizzell, who was the son of an oil driller, traveled the oil fields of Texas and Oklahoma as a youth. He earned the nickname “Lefty” from his southpaw boxing style as a teen‐age fighter in Texas."

"In baseball, “southpaw” has referred to left-handed pitchers since the 19th century. One origins tale notes that old ballparks were oriented with home plate to the west, so that a lefty facing west would be throwing with his “south” paw."

I'll second that. A lot of good country singers learned from him. I'm a bit younger, so more used to the Merle Haggard version. I don't believe that I've ever heard the original.
Thank you for posting it.

I think Jimmie Rogers was from Meridian MS. One of my favorites is also from Meridian, Steve Forbert.

Steve had a big hit in the 70s, Romeos Tune. He's been around for 40 + years and in my top 5.

Steve Forbert released an album of all Jimmie Rogers tunes. Worth a listen.

^^^^
Released in 2002. The site I found it on (AllMusic.com) gives it 3 stars. If critics don't like it, I will probably enjoy it.

Here's an acoustic version of one of my favorite Jerry Jeff Walker tunes done by the writer, Guy Clark. Guy Clark - Desperados Waiting For A Train - YouTube
