Gooy, that is a difficult question to answer and deserves its own thread... especially as old timers are probably the last folk you want to poll. Comes down to how much you want to spend and whether you want to really get into high fidelity audio (and video). I have had several different systems over the years including BOSE. I still use their wave clock radio after many years and handed down my noise canceling headphones for some good earbuds for miniaturization when traveling.

However, I would steer clear of Bose for a sound system if you are somewhat serious about equipment, upgrading, and adding/mixing/matching the components you want. Yeah they sound very nice and are compact and if you aren't into components where you can buy different brands then go for it. I sold my Bose surround sound because it had proprietary connections and doesn't make it easy at all to integrate with any other equipment.

Bose has brilliant marketing and for many this plug and play sleek and easy is more than fine. If you want to get blown away and spend lots of money, visit Nuts about HiFi in Silverdale. Believe it or not they are recognized statewide and beyond for high end equipment and installation. You probably don't want to spend the money for their equipment and service unless you are a true audiophile. But go there for the experience. Tell them Mark sent you. Also go to Best Buy and talk to a few different geeky guys and they will fill your head with what to do.

Brands... Denon for A/V Receivers to start. Rega for a turntable. Speakers... oh boy. I have Focals and love them. Speakers are where you can and should spend money if you really are serious. Other brands that make good equipment... Yamaha, Sony, Onkyo all have all been around for a long time too.

I am sure many will chime in here... but as I said... you better set a budget first and plan to spend the most on your speakers. If your better half won't like speakers hogging up space in the living room or where you plan to put them... then Bose become very attractive. Just remember you are locked in. Good luck!

I still have my BSR Quantra 500 turntable I was surprised with on Christmas back in 1976. She is still plays but the amp and speakers blew decades ago.

Those were the days. The early-mid 1970's were a lot easier if you had the $$ for a stereo setup with good speakers and turntable. I still have the vinyl albums of the day and often think of the joy of listening to such crystal clear sounds after an early life of listening to AM static. I still have my entire setup as well but it's stuffed in the basement or a closet.

BOSE.

I bought the least expensive BOSE sound system (cube speakers) back in '02. It has worked flawlessly with the 3 TV's that I've upgraded to over the years, including my current 4k Samsung. There has been no reason to 'upgrade' the BOSE system, although there's no jack for an MP3 input as MP3 wasn't even developed when I purchased. (Heck, Apple doesn't even sell iPod anymore :))

My computer sound system is also a BOSE. I have a BOSE 'wave' clock/radio and recently bought (via my 'flight' points) a BOSE noise-cancelling headset.

BOSE. You get what you pay for and it lasts, even as technology advances. :eek:ath:

There's a saying in the audio electronic/home theater business..."No Highs, No Lows...Must be BOSE"
I've seen it on the back of Yamaha T shirts...

My wife's uncle was into home-audio gear back when. I had done some commercial sound reinforcement work when I was a pup, so we used to have chat's about the the occasional copy of High Fidelity mag he had around. (He's still alive, and so is virtually all of the decent gear he bought...... changed one front-panel power switch on a big amp, and had some minor service work done on one of his reel-reel decks, but that's it. Another guy I worked with had a big collection of Ampex gear, but that's a whole other drift.....).

HIGH FIDELITY - Consumer audio and music magazine

I remember one conversation in particular, about a guy he worked with that he introduced to the hobby. As he put it "He got it bad". His co-worker totally designed a new house, around the Klipsch speakers he was enamoured with. Room design, shape, acoustic surface treatments..... on and on.....

To modify a saying from Racing (and attempt to stay with Title :))........ "It's easy to make a Small Fortune with high-end audio gear..... just start with a Large one !"

Haven't been there in years, but I remember the first time I walked into Bay Bloor Radio in downtown Toronto..... I probably looked like I'd been hit in the head with a sledgehammer, standing there on the verge of drooling, while I stared at the STACKS of McIntosh amps they had set up as demos......

Selecting discrete audio components can be a fun project if you are so inclined, but it's relatively easy to get into "If you have to Ask, You can't Afford It" territory......

I purchased an all-in-one unit from Bose that was over $1000. I thought I was splurging on a really nice system, but I was disappointed to find the sound rather flat. I thought my very old system with one functional speaker sounded better.

I returned the Bose system and bought a big ol' set of JBL speakers. I think size really does matter.

I find it to be useful for putting things into perspective.
