1. Aussie Sheperd
2. German Sheperd
3. Doberman Pinscher

These are favorites, mostly because they are what I have been around when I grew up, and since I have been grown up. My Aussie was a shelter rescue. She has been an AWESOME dog. She is 15 now, and still going.

When I was a kid, I was around German Sheperds, both my family's, and my Uncles dogs. They were great dogs; well tempered and even mannered. Two of my uncles were big ones. Flint was a 175lb purebred black/tan. Cajun was a son of Flint's, from when he bred with our female. Cajun was snow white from head to toe. He also weighed 185 healthy pounds.

Our Doberman, Zach, was given to my Dad by a friend. He had professional training as a guard dog, but they did not think he was mean or tough enough. That dog was so great with us kids. He liked to lay on us; he was a really touchy kinda dog. He was very good at behavior, but a lot of that was the Pro training.

I would get any of the three again. Probably will some day, as another rescue.

Newfie - temperment.

They are great with kids, cats and other dogs.

The biggest downside is there short lifespan. A 10 year old Newfoundland is a senior citizen. Some drool, especially when excited.

We've had 4 over the past 18 years, currently down to a single 130# 8 year old female. They've always been 100% house dogs. Her companion is a aussie shepard/lab mix that thinks he's a Newfie, (aka water dog). We have a pond in the front yard and he spends more time swimming with the boys than the Newfie, she hangs out on the porch watching the action from the shade unless the boys get too wild. Then she gets involved.

Well, for me it is a toss up. It is our Pits or our Rotties. We have had other dogs and so far, after have the wife to rescue for both, we like these two breeds best. It is hard to say which one but after seeing all the lovable homeless dogs (pits) get put down because of un-educated public, bad owners & lack of homes we took some in. Plus it is depressing as “you know what” to see this happen. They are smart, lovable, lap dogs, eager to please, great with kids and less hair then some other dogs.

The owner needs to understand the breed(s) and how to raise them. It is like all dogs here; each hate traits & you need to understand them. Example, my rotties are stubborn at times and our pits are always “ready to go”. After having our male was put down my new running partner (pit) can finally do the 13-milers with me! Great running partner and keeps going like the energize bunny. He is like my BX22; small, compact but keeps going and tough little guy. The other little guy is getting there and my female rottie is a great lap dog that loves to sit by the window and watch anything that moves.

All are my kids and get treated better then some kids today!

We've had a Standard Schnauzer, a black Lab, a couple of different terriers, a couple of mixed breed pit bulls, a mixed breed Rotweiler, a Springer Spaniel, a Doberman -- and I would not have a single one of them over again. After our first rescued Greyhound, we now have two, and I doubt we will ever be without one again.

One is a timid female, not a whole lot of playful fun, but loyal to a fault and a joy to walk. The other is an exuberant male whose tail is a weapon as he wags it. Absolutely gentle temperament, little care, no shedding, rarely bark, walk on a leash like they were born to it, couch potatoes who love to run but usually for about 5 minutes, then they want to lay down and not move. The only thing that's tough is two of them in a motor home without a slide-out; our next coach will definitely have slide-outs so we can walk around the dogs.

I'm partial to Squirrel dogs because they tree squirrels and I can shoot them out to the dog. Once had a Collie Shepard mix and now I have a Kemmer Cur.

I guess I really can't name a favorite. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

One thing I do not like is small dogs with a very annoying bark. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

A couple of breeds that I do like are: Great Pyrenesse, Siberian Huskies, and German Sheperds.

I like Great Pyrenesse because of their herding instinct and very loyal. They also will bark, and I mean with an aggressive tone to it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Mine was great with the kids and cats. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

What I liked about the Siberian Huskey was her stamina and ability to kill anything on my property that wasn't suppose to be here. Ground Hawgs, Coons, Rabbits, Stray cats, and even a Buzzard that got to close to one of her dead hawgs. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif She knew our cats and didn't bother any of them. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I only wish they would bark. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I haven't had the German Shepard yet, but my brother has had several and swears by them. Very loyal and the one he had would climb the ladder and come up on roofs with us. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

This will be an interesting thread. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

RedDog, dogless at the moment /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is the most AKC registered dog in the USA for many reasons:

Temperment: When have you ever seen a mean, aggressive Lab. (Abused dogs can not be included)

Intelligent: These dogs can be trained to do anything! Watch ESPN Outdoors

Loyal: They are always by "your" side

Entertaining: Loves kids and can you say "let's play, let's play, throw the ball"

Great Hunter: Labs retrieve, flush and with a little work even point

I prefer Black

Besides, my house is a Lab shrine............... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
