What is this tool used for?

I found this in my yard. It has a nail point at the top apex that might function as a compass point or stabilizer point, and two retractable blades on the side. What is it used for?

I saw something like that advertized on TV once. It's not a tool, it's a shelf. You stick it in a corner and slide the lever underneath the shelf to force the sharp pins into the wall to support the shelf.

I tried searching for "scientific products M1075" (all I could read from the picture) no joy...

Uhmm... Unless I am mistaken, the Scientific Products M1075 is just the ruler that was put in the photograph to show the scale.
I'm gonna go with "shelf" here as well.

OK I see that now...what is the item made of? it looks like a soft (paper) material...unless it is firmer how could it be used as a shelf?

I think you're right - I googled "instant shelf" and it there are products for sale that look the same. The nailpoint at the end goes into the corner, and the two small blades extend into the drywall a bit to hold it horizontal. I wouldn't use it to hold anything of value, however - it seems like it has a pretty tenous hold on the drywall.
