What is this item?

I'm thinking if it had a large, loosely attached pressure pad where the slot is, then, with a hook over a milk can handle. it could be used to press down a stubborn lid . Maybe remove a stuck lid, too.

What is this?
It was found in an old woodshed.

It is about one foot long.

It appears there's not a lot of old mechanics here with all this guessing. I'll repeat my previous post. It is a valve spring compresser. I've used them very similar to that.
