The manual is confusing because it says that when the glow plug indicator light goes out after the key has been turned to the "ON" position the plugs are heated. Buth then on the very next page it says to turn the key the the "PREHEAT" position and hold it for 9 seconds before starting the engine.

I have just been turning the key on and waiting until the glow plug indicator light goes out and then starting the engine. Is this right? And if so, why is there a preheat position? For really cold days, maybe?

The "preheat" position does not really exist on the CK20. As you said, you turn the key to the first position which is the glow plug. On some tractors, you turn the key to the left to preheat with the glow plugs, which, in my opinion, is preferable to the CK20 system. You don't need much if any preheating in the warm weather, but on the CK20, the glowplug is going to come on anyway. You don't have to wait for it to go out to start the engine, and it won't harm anything if you don't. In colder weather you should wait until the light goes out. I hope they change the operation of the glow plug, back to the left, on the newer models, as it's just a waste to have the plug operate evey time whether you want it to or not. John

It sounds like yours may not be the same as mine
Mine has a preheat postion in between ON and START but I am not sure why since the plugs heat every time the key is turned on.

On mine, you turn once, glow plug, turn a little more, start. You have three positions? Strange. You're doing it right though, and you don't really need much preheating in this weather. You can go ahead and start right away if you want to, but if it doesn't start right away, let it warm a few seconds. In colder weather, let the plug light go off before you try it. John

Mine is the same way.
I believe that the "turn and hold" is there in case it is very cold and you want to heat up the plugs longer manually . G

i usually "turn and hold" till you hear the little "click" sound...about 10 seconds...if its cold outside, i'll hold it for about 15 seconds after the click...also, the longer you hold it (within reason) the less smoke there is at startup, which is important when your garage is attached to your house.

You can manually preheat all CK20's, but in warm weather there is no need. The manual preheat is right before the start position on the switch and is indicated by a curly wire symbol.

Wow! You're exactly right and I never noticed the preheat as I never needed to do anything but turn it to glowplug and then start. I didn't realize that part way between I could operate the glow plug again if needed. It never has been needed here. Learn something new every day! Thanks, John

Don,

Gee, I don't know if he's so lucky! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

After all, he doesn't get to see his fingers turn blue....

or feel the hair in his nose freeze....

or have to put on 2 shirts, a sweater, an insulated vest, and a parka just to go out and get the mail....

or have his tongue get stuck to a flagpole (oops, should've left that one out! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)...

or .....

Wait a minute! He IS a lucky dog!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
