I'll admit I don't stay in hotels that often, but will a couple times a year, most recently in Sept. Never have I run into this. Card as door key, but that's it.
One time about a year ago when I went to my room the tv was on with a welcome message for the person who'd booked the room (it was a work-related trip).

When you say dim, do you mean low beam or does it automatically reduce the headlights' output?
What's the reasoning behind this? Are they assuming that if you're going under 35 you're probably in town where there are street lights? Not just deer/moose/other wildlife, but some of the back roads around here are so rough you don't really want to go much over 35 anytime.
Low beam, not sure of the reasoning. Yea, we drive about 35 mph on the last mile to our house, that's where I have to override the auto low beam.

You tip the cleaning lady at a hotel? The tipping stuff has gotten so out of control, I really didnt know that was expected
I'm just the opposite. I leave the "Do Not Disturb" sign up for the duration of my stay. I don't need or want someone coming in everyday to make my bed and clean the sink. They should leave ME a tip, because I saved them work!
My experience has been that if you've booked multiple nights, the cleaners don't necessarily come in every day unless you request it. Unmade bed, towels where I left them has been the rule past few years. No biggie, I don't sleep in fresh sheets every night at home, no need to away from home either.

As far as tipping hotel maids, while I don't do it, it's been around for quite a long time. Agree that expectations of a tip have gotten out of hand.

Besides, the fresh sheets don't glow as brightly under UV light, as well as the used ones do. 😈

Low beam, not sure of the reasoning.
I was told it was implemented due to some cities and towns scattered across the country having published/unpublished rules about no high beams while driving within their city/town urban areas.
I recall a buddy of mine getting pulled over for just such, in local small city. I never had heard of it before

I stopped using autodim a long time ago. I dim them much sooner than the machine did anyways, and the first time that it turned the highsback on when the oncoming car was still yards away I shut it off.

Likely that's not possible on newer vehicles.

I never use high beams, they just annoy me.
Stupid deer everywhere, have to stop sometimes 2-3 times driving between home and town for them to cross.
No streetlights around here which is nice.

When we were in Florence, Italy I decided to go out and do the laundry. Being a considerate husband I took the room key so I wouldn't have to wake her when I returned. At this hotel, as is not uncommon in Europe, I left the key at the desk when I left. What I didn't realize was, at this hotel they then hung the key on hook connected to a relay which killed power to the room. So my wife had to go down to the desk in her nightgown (because I was washing all our clothes) and try to explain to the clerk that she needed the lights back on. Not so easy when he doesn't speak much English and she doesn't speak any Italian.

Kind of sounds like start buttons on gas pumps. Insert credit card, answer a bunch of questions, listen some junk commercials on the tiny screen, insert pump and look around wondering why it's not pumping. Look some more. And some more. Finally go inside, and be informed there is that button way off to the side that needs pushed to start the pump. I was busy filling up once and the old couple nearby were having a wonderful time. Just pump the gas would you, I'm trying I'm trying as he's thrashing around trying to get it to work -- (bet he didn't know about that g**d** button). I see most pumps now have them gone.
