It probably WAS company policy (and for good reason), but clearly not strictly enforced. A personal appeal to the right person can often work wonders.
When my ex left, I tried to remove the vehicle she took from MY insurance policy. The agent wouldn't let me without her approval. The vehicles were all in my name only but she was listed as a driver.

People pulling trailers down the road that have no working lights on it!

Sometimes you might even see why the lights don't work ... Pigtail not plugged in, or the lights are missing all together! 😔

Don't people walk around there trailer to see theses things, or glance in the mirrors every few hours??? 🧐

And speaking of the occasional trailer pullers, especially the 8'+ wide ones, most seem to forget that they are wider than the tow vehicle, who drive right on the center line, with trailer out of there lane!!!

I suspect most pulling trailers without working lights only realized their lights aren’t working when it’s already too late to do anything about it. I see it all the time on boat trailers, folks who need to head home from the boat ramp with lights that aren’t working.

But yeah on the width… there should be a separate test required for those wanting to pull trailers. Not everyone should be allowed that priveledge.

Lol reminds me of a funny story my wife who's a pretty good driver as long as a trailers not hooked up I guess was pulling a 102" wide snowmobiles trailer with a four wheeler hauling brush took out half our old garden fence with t posts before she saw me waving my arms like a crazed lunatic. 😂 lesson being don't operate a atv for work with headphones on jamming to John Mayer or cold play or something I guess.

A few times trailer lights went out when I was towing it was either a corroded or broken ground, someone else using bloody wire nuts, or those cheap 4 flats failed. Of course I'm usually on the backwoods highways and any gas station around doesn't have what I need to fix it. and or snap on prices on the cheapest tools I've ever seen. I learned to take quite the collection of electrical consumables in my trucks tool box like heat shrink crimp connectors, 12 gauge wire, and spare 4 flats with me.

I’ve never had a trailer light failure, but I do my own work and wiring on my own equipment, so I usually have the chance to see any component failure coming long before it comes to that. But just the same, I put reflectors on all of my trailers, such that if lights go out when hauling at night, it’s not a disaster.

I’ll post a link to a pack I just bought from Amazon last week, to replace a few I had to peel while repainting on of my trailers this month. I find reflectors most useful when parking a trailer on the road at night, you want to be sure drivers can actually see the thing in the dark when the lights are off.

Problem with a 4 flat is you can't see it's going to fail they have always failed internally still with the hard rubber covering on it.

I always use dielectric grease on trailer wiring couplers before and after hauling something also.

Or it's done on purpose. Go ahead and hit my trailer. In your lane, go ahead hit it. Merging, go ahead hit it. Turn in front, go ahead hit it. Trouble is, trucks are usually light in the rear, and rely on a trailer following, not being pushed sideways, and at speed. There goes truck and trailer off into never never land.

Fortunately I've never had problems with a 7 blade round wiring coupler.
