irvingj,

Did some digging about my replacement battery, and changed the link in my post #2,587 on page 259 to the corrected link for the battery.

Under the specifications it's listed as "maintenance free".

Here's a couple of pictures of my replacement battery as installed, and a picture of the document I have in my receipts binder.

Hope this helps more than confuses,

KC

I just went with a Walmart Everstat Max grp 51...so far so good.

KC, perhaps that was one of the maintenance-free versions... one of the less expensive ones I looked at simply said "a flush-top design to minimize water spillage" or something to that effect. In any case, I didn't want to have to deal with trying to add water with that battery location!

And, hey -- does a 3-cylinder diesel vibrate much? Duh.... That's another reason I wouldn't settle for less than AGM design.

Anyway, that tiny, new Deka "INTIMIDATOR" (a chorus of suitable "Oohs" and "Ahhs" here) battery is on the way. Hope it lives up to its hype! BTW, that's the same battery series (much bigger, and four of 'em) I just replaced in my RV...at 4 Benjamins each, and that was a deal!....guess I already mentioned that, but man those suckers were costly!!

Well, I sure hope I didn't mess that up, but it wouldn't be the first time I've screwed up something so basic....

It sorta depends on what's considered the "front," doesn't it?

I will say that when I deciphered/looked up the original battery number, it came out as the "R" version. When assuming (right, I know...) the only label on the vertical side is the "front," the positive is, in fact, on the right. (That also makes the label on the top right-side-up when viewed from that direction.)

I notice that in the link you provided for your NAPA battery, the positive is on the left when looking at the label on the "front".... BUT.. the posts are on the rear edge of my battery while they're on the front edge on that NAPA one...which makes them the same!

Sheesh! Who knew it could be this %@ing complicated?!?

Battery issues are spreading, my 6 or 7 year old battery maybe giving up.

My maintenance charger, NOCO genius G750 is now showing a solid orange light near the bottom.

Manual says battery lacks enough juice to go into maintenance mode.

It could be the charger that's messing up or it could be both the battery and the charger.

Snow on the way Friday so I'll see if it starts or I will need to jump it.

Freshly in my old memory bank is the battery I may need to replace, again.

I put a yellpow top Optima in my GC and it has the terminals in the centre instead of near the side. It appears that it allows one model of battery to fit both types of connections.

OK, an age-old question -- really confusing-- answered, if my info is correct:

With the (long) edge of the battery that has the terminals on it facing AWAY from you, a "RIGHT" battery will have the positive terminal on the right -- oriented just as in the photo above of mine with the charger connected to it, so the 51R battery I ordered should be good.

Even the diagram that I found is "backward"! (Positive on LEFT, but termed "RIGHT")

So apparently, the "front" of a battery is the long edge without the terminals on it.

PS-- check out this AI "definition": "The positive terminal of a battery should be on the positive side, and the negative terminal should be on the negative side."

Wow, that's helpful!!!

truth be told I suspect an R and a non-R battery would both work in your 2300 and my 2400.
+ cable slack from solenoid to post would be only issue and way + cable comes up should be enough slack for either. least there is on my gc2400.
newer 17xx stuff, don't remember and too cold to go look at the 2 nearby.
