The slightest scratch or nick can be enough of a weak point that takes almost no trigger to let go.

Re: What the **** has happened to my window!?

- Yes the glass was/is nice and tight

I think this might be the problem. But you said the door was open when the glass cracked. This means that there was probably only a small temperature variation and no temperature differential from one side of the door to the other.
If the galss was too tight, and the temerture changed or otherwise increased, things are going to expand. When the wood expands, the opening that the glass sets in gets smaller, and the glass gets bigger.
But you said the door was open.......
Something is fishy here:mad:
Who is going to pay for this repair? Is it the person who comitted this heinuos act?
Would you suspect the person who busted the window would get with his friends on the internet to help with excuses?

If you use the temperature/expansion excuse I just gave you.....I'm going to need your billing address.
Hope this helps :p

I actually saw this exact same thing happen to a client last year. The night temperature was a good 25 degrees cooler and when the summer sun hit it the next morning it shattered.

What a terrible thing--to accuse our long-term and helpful member Bird of such vandalism...I hope he brings your post count back down to zero...

Re: What the **** has happened to my window!?

Jamie, if you carefully remove the moulding around the window, you may find something that was binding on the window. In the old days, it could have been one of those glass points that was driven in too tight. I just suspect something hard was against the glass and the pressure caused the fracture. If you can't find any impact evidence, then the frame and glass mount is the next most suspicious thing to look for. It could be something small like a tiny tack used in assembly. Are those leaded sections or just made to look like leaded glass?

On closer examination, it doesn't look like leaded glass, but just etched patterns on the glass.

Re: What the **** has happened to my window!?

Remember folks, this is tempered glass. It's very strong on the face, but easily broken from the corners and edges. No way a bird did this. When I give tours through the window factory I work in, one of the demonstrations I give is swinging a 40lb bag of lead shot on the end of a 4 ft cable at a piece of tempered glass. We let guests slam that bag into the glass with all they've got.

With this in mind, when tempered glass does finally break from a frontal impact it will explode all over the room, due to the tremendous force it would take to do this in the first place. The fact that the glass is still hanging in the frame suggests a break from an edge, not impact. I'm going with the temperature/binding/protruding piece of hardware theory.

...of course, this is another viable theory. Tempered is quite easy to scratch.
