This is my first winter with my new to me 3038e, the owners manual says to put the range lever in low and turn the key to start position for X seconds, then move the lever to neutral and let it start. It does not say what is going on in the machine. Does this activate an internal heater? All I can figure it would do is push the diesel real tight to the injectors. What goes on when this start procedure is followed?

I suspect an internal heater.. the service tech manual should spell out the function and procedure to tell what is going on.
The heater is on the intake manifold with four bolts and a wire attached.

On my 4110 that is how the glow plugs are activated

Glow plugs

No glow plugs in the 3038e.. just the intake manifold heating element, (item #5 in attached).

Apparently the cold weather starting procedure is different depending on the serial number and engine type. Only the older models with the Yanmar 3TNV84T require the low-range to neutral process.

S/N (010001-609999) North American , Yanmar 3TNV84T - Low-range to activate heater
S/N (610000-710000) North American , Yanmar 3TNV86CT-NJT - Neutral to activate glow plugs
S/N (710001-) North American , Yanmar 3TNV86CT-NJT - Neutral to activate glow plugs

No glow plugs in the 3038e.. just the intake manifold heating element, (item #5 in attached).

That appears to only be true for the older 3TNV84T engine. 3038e models with the 3TNV86CT-NJT have glow plugs (item #37 below).

The OP will need to check that out, to identify his setup.

Mine is about 6-7 years old, the first or second year made, bitter cold out right now to check the serial number, will do tomorrow.

I do find it unusual that with the long 40+ year history of glow plugs that they would introduce a new model without them and then add them later, makes me wonder what was going on in the North American Engineering Department.
