If most people saved the board up materials, there wouldn't be a massive shortage and price gouging / increase cost during this time of year (storm season). Yes, there is an increase due to new construction, but there usually is a production plan in place for that...

It's the commodities markets that create short term spikes in price during hurricane season and more so when there is a threatening storm...most retailers/suppliers will only honor quoted prices for a few days during this time...

...IMPACT Windows? Short of Tempered, that would still break if hit by the right thing at the right angle and speed, there isn't such a thing...

You mean like a 757 really didn't hit the Pentagon ??...!

A lot of people have accordion hurricane shutters, the fold to the sides and stay up permanently, plus they have locks.
They are very easy to close and open.

I have the utmost empathy and sympathy for folks that have to sit through a storm in the night in a boarded up house with no electricity etc...

Good friend of mine owns a business in Winter Haven that installs these. They're pretty cool but darn pricey IMO. Thought about having him do my house in IN until he said the price. Just thought it would be nice to completely shut up the house when we go on vacations and stuff.

I can't even imagine living there without some sophisticated backup power system.

I doubt it.

Maybe a foolish notion. But I have never heard of a community having a cummunal generating station for emergency power only. Given human inteligence, they would probably build it below sea level! lol

It's one of those things that you have to live through (experience in real life) to understand...once the worst of a storm has passed (usually 6 hours or so)...that is when (if it's daylight) you deal with auxiliary power supplies like generators etc..not during the worst of a storm...

My generators (Slow Running Diesel) are in the garage. They don't care if it's daylight or not. I don't understand the comment. I did say sophisticated. Not some screamer sitting outside with a cord going into the house.
