My mid-mount mower shaft is getting a bit dried out. What grease do you all use on your PTO shafts.

If you're just talking about the splines - I just grab a dob out of the grease gun. Other than sliding the shaft on or off the splines - there is no constant mechanical friction movement with the shaft during use (not like a bearing or some sliding movement) so as long as it stays on the shaft I'd think any reasonably heavy wheel grease or lube would work.

If you're talking about a u-joint then that could be a little more fussy.

I asked the same question after I cut the PTO shaft on my post hold digger to length. Of course I got that durned thing all covered with dirt and muck as I was cutting and testing it. So I wiped it clean with a bit of diesel and went to the parts store for some grease.

They said "any old grease" so I bought a little tub of wheel bearing grease. Slapped a handful on it and put it togather. Seems to work fine.

I agree with the others. if I need to generically grease something small, I use a squirt of grease from my grease gun ( which is loaded with NH 'blue' grease ). If i need a large amount of 'non-specific' grease, I dip my hand into my 5lbs tub of axle grease I have and rub it on whatever...

I think that most any grease is better then none at all, just don't over-do a good thing.
