My 12 Gauge eats snakes!!!!!!!!!! and likes em too.

What are the snakes in the lake eating? I'll have to get some pictures of them. They are dark colored with faded looking yelow kind of stripes on them.

Road runners eat baby rattlers...and gophers, and snails. But they also like to eat lizards so I have no use for them as I like the lizards.

I hate snakes...really hate snakes... However if there is one to keep around it would be a King snake. We used to have one in our garage that was at least 10' long. It was long enough to lay double across three rafters. Ironically we even named him Charlie.

King snakes can really make a difference in keeping other snakes away. Just in case you need a picture of one:

Here in the South East, I have only ever seen the black with white stripes variety.

Actually, I think Mongoose are too slow to kill rattlers. Cobras have fairly slow reflexes and the Mongoose is faster.

One of the wisest men I ever knew was an engineer on the first professional job I had. We were making fuel for nuclear reactors out in the desert near San Diego. Lots of snakes, mostly rattlers.

He loved to point out that the cute little ground squirrels had fleas and sometimes carried bubonic plague. The rattlers ate the squirrels and had no fleas. He would rather deal with a deadly snake he could see and hear than a plague-carrying flea.

I leave the snakes alone here. We have lots of them too. 2 different species of rattler, king snakes, garters, hog noses and bull snakes. I thought I saw a copper head the other day too but I wasn't sure. I didn't know we had any.

The bull snakes eat rattlers I know. When I was plowing about a week ago I saw a big old bull snake with about 3 feet of the tail end of a diamond back hanging out of his mouth. That was cool.

The little prairie rattlers are the only ones I ever mess with. I got bit by one several years ago and a couple years ago I stepped on another one in the tall grass. My son was right behind me with a shotgun and shot him right between my feet. I'm sure glad he has good aim!!!! I've been shot before too but not with a shotgun at close range. That would ruin a day, I'm sure.

Really though, after having to rewire one of my pickups and finding a rats nest in the air filter of my new tractor once I have been leaving the snakes alone as much as possible. The bull snakes I will actually get off my tractor and help them out of the way when I see them so they don't get hurt.
We have a bunch of farm cats now too.

I know there are people who love snakes but I just don't care for then. Pennsylvania can be a little boring at times. Thank goodness we don't have many snakes here in Lancaster. I can live without snake excitement. I guess we have ticks that give us lyme disease and mosquitoes that give us west nile to make up for it.

When I was first married I worked pounding nails down in NC. One day the bulldozer guy went behind the house for a break and came back white as a sheet with a copperhead hanging on his pants leg. Don't tell me bell bottoms are stupid. No more quicky breaks behind the house for me I walked down the street to the portapit. After the guys dispatched the snake the put the remains in the bosses lunch bag. What a hoot. Those were the good old days.

I love practical jokes, but I would never do that to somebody. My Dad and a group of other guys went fishing/camping when I was a kid. One of the guys was as afraid of snakes as Eddie Walker, or even more if that is possible. The guys rolled up a boat fuel hose and put it in his sleeping bag. When he went to get into the bag, he screamed and voided himself right on the spot. That included throwing up and crying. It was a horrible thing and my Dad told me about it because that incident could have had horrible results if that fellow had a weak heart. I know fun is fun, but I would never want to play a joke on somebody who has an elevated fear of something.

Now, Dad used to walk up beside me in the dark and carefully take the foot opposite me and rub it up the back of my leg. I was sure something was crawling up the back of my leg every time. He has been gone many years, but I still remember how hard he laughed at me when I jumped.:D :D
