What eats SNAKES

Our German Shepard would kill them. He got bit once by a copperhead on his neck and it swelled up real big, but it never bothered him. I think Ducks do a number on them also. Ducks and Guineas make a lot of noise with a snake around also. Saw a King snake swallowing a water mocassin once. That that was freaky.

This is what I killed a couple of weekends ago and I'm still upset over it but I did not know kings come in that color. Now I know and I'll never kill another!!

He was right around my pond which has moccasins....

A wild pig's favorite food is rattlesnake and skunk. Beyond that, most cats are good for killing them, my 12 guages are excellent, and my brush hog eats them real quick when I'm mowing the pastures. I'll try to move a non piosonous snake away from the house and back into some cover when possible, but I'll kill every rattler and cottonmouth I see, no matter where they are. With our 1 1/2 acre tank 100 yds behind our house, sometimes it can get real busy and real interesting regarding snakes. Most of the time, the only ones that come around the house are bull snakes, chasing frogs or mice.

N80 if I would have found that in my house I would have burned it to the ground after I wet myself.
I had this happen to me just last week. Cat had cornered a 50" black snake.
In the words of CSI - "COD was blunt force trama"
If they are outside I go my way and they can go theirs, but once they come into my home they die.. Just like any other unwanted critter.

I have always heard that peacocks eat snakes and that early settlers kept them around for that reason, but I have no first hand experience. If they do eat them it would be a double whammy: they are pretty to look at and kids love to watch them.

Hungry students.

Son just returned from 6 week geology field camp in Wyoming. 40 students, assorted profs and TAs, 1 cook assisted by TAs. Per our son the cook is a disgruntled vegetarian, and they seldom got animal protein. They were often in the field 8-10 hours a day walking (much of it up & down hills), and complaints became frequent and loud about the lack of meat, chicken, or even fish. One afternoon when they returned from the field one of the group announced he was at the breaking point and was going to get food. Their base camp is definitely isolated. This student took a stick and his geology hammer and began scouring the hillside behind the camp as others watched. Eventully he found what he wanted in the form of a 4' rattler. He killed it and then gathered sticks to build a fire in full view of everyone and cooked it. He offered others, some partook, some didn't. It was not the last rattler they would encounter.

Ah, geology. They call it work & field trips, but it's really vacation, usually on someone else's nickle. My daughter was a geology major & visited Brazil, Death Valley, Arkansas, Colorado, & Kyrgyzstan [twice] while she was working on her degrees. Near as I can tell, that's not an unusual. Wish I'd known that when I started college.

Guinea fowl kill snakes but probably just small ones.

I know there are people who love snakes but I just don't care for then. Pennsylvania can be a little boring at times. Thank goodness we don't have many snakes here in Lancaster.

Hate to break it to you but we have piles of snakes. There are probably two black snakes in every barn you see. And we have cottonmouths too. They like to live by all the catch-and-release trout streams we've been protecting.

In the backyard we saw three different species of large snake a few weeks back and two weeks ago my son and I were playing with a juvenile milk snake.

I promise, no shortage of snakes here. Just fewer deadly ones.
