What do you let your dog chew on?

Our GSD has had lots of chew toys from ropes (which he liked to pull threads from the ends and eat) to the canvas rings and Frisbee toys. The silicon rubber Frisbees last longer as long as I pick them up after play time and don't allow him to just set and chew. He likes to put his paws on any toy and then pull at it with his teeth to tear chunks out of it.
We give him ham bones which last him about 30 minutes till they are all chewed up and gone. All pork rib bones go to him for disposal. We always try to leave a bit of meat on them too. A pork rib bone is good for about 30 seconds. He breaks them up and chews them to a powder. I have never seen a dog chew his food like my German Shepherd. Even a small piece of bacon is good for at least 10 chews with him. He doesn't grab and gulp down food like most dogs, he gently takes it from you and gently chews it up well before swallowing. We never, ever give him any part of a chickens skeleton. His diet is a bowl of dry dog food with cooked meat and juices from chicken legs/thighs and sometimes cheap cuts of pork plus a begging portion of just about anything we eat. His teeth are perfect and he has no problem with natural bones of any type.
He also loves the "Meaty Bone" dog biscuits as a treat.

Now that's a cute happy looking doggie!

THANKS jimmyj, The wife and I are retired so he's been a loyal friend and companion + keeps us busy tending to his needs, forget about us, he's the Boss....... Whenever he ventures out it's with a toy, we've probably cycled thru 20 different types but the COLLAR Puller Ring is his favorite because he loves to play Tug, to the point he threw my shoulder out last year. I can throw it like a Frisbee or roll-it and he scrambles. O'ld Smiley gets so excited at times he'll run full-bore towards you (toy in tow) then starts spinning about 15 feet away, @ 75 pounds of pure muscle we dart (more like run for our lives) out of the way, could easily break a leg. Doesn't know pain - Two years ago following a large Kong Ball into a Wild Rose Bush he broke off a thorn in his retina, the Animal Eye Surgeon (never knew there was such a thing - good one in western Mass) shaved a layer off the side (white portion of eye) created a flap and stitched it over the wound after removing the thorn ($4,000.00) but well worth it, almost lost sight. Recently started a nightly routine before we retire, goes out the door blazing and barking to ensure all is clear then meanders back in. Good Doggie !!!!

Dobbies here. We have been giving ours the Rawhide Rolls. Target : Expect More. Pay Less.
They don;'t last long - but worth the cost for 20 minutes of peace. Between both dogs, it's not uncommon for us to go through a pack per night. They are made in USA.
I also use the large size "Kong" toy. I stuff it with a couple of dog treats (the cookie type bones) and that keeps them busy for a while too.

Water buffalo horns is what we give our dogs. They are SERIOUS chewers. The horns seems to hold up the best.

They shatter antlers.

On occasion we will get full beef leg bones from our local butcher. Not smoked, as the process makes them brittle and the dogs shatter them into jagged little pieces.

Rawhide rolls from Costco last 10 to 15 minutes.

Also nylabones, but we need to watch them with those. They can quickly chew the ends into prison shivs.

Hi check. I have been in the pet industry for almost 40 years in different areas and currently own a pet store. And yes, we do sell the hard chews regularly. In fact, I recommend them for some dogs but definitely not all dogs and certainly not for very aggressive chewers. When we sell things at our store, we always advise customers of the possible risk and say that it's about each dog and how aggressive they are when they chew. Some dogs are fine with them, some are not. Heck we even sell frozen chicken backs for people who feed raw diets, bones and all. There are lots of statements in veterinary publications that swear against hard chews, here are some examples: From the American Veterinary Dental College " Dogs are carnivores they chew on bones in the wild. However, AVDC does not recommend cow hooves, dried natural bones or hard nylon products because they are too hard and do not mimic the effect of a dog tearing meat off a carcass. These hard products are associated with broken teeth or damaged gums." And from PetMd.com 4 Treats That Can Harm Your Dog's Teeth | petMD All of the vet clinics in my area swear against all hard chews for all dogs, nobody should use any of them they say. But one of the problems with the veterinary advice is that even though there are plenty of examples of dogs having broken teeth from stuff like this, they taint their position by recommending you buy other products from them instead of the pet store. So a lot of people are put off feeling it is a sales pitch.

Wow, Jimmy, thanks! I'm going to trash all our chew toys, like the Nylar bone that we have and the antlers.

Had one dog that would retrieve a dirty sock from the cloths bin and destroy it when I went out.
A cat that destroyed most wooden chair legs.
A dog that refused certain treats in a very demonstrative way.
One that always left my wife's slippers soggy when she came home from shopping if left alone.
A 'mutt' that loved ping pong balls but never broke them, another that likes playing with 'throw a way' water bottles.
Most comical is a dog that 'fetches' snow balls, naturally never can catch one, but sure funny to watch him plowing with his nose searching for it.

Caesar Chavez , where are you? Help?

Our 85 lb. English yellow Lab (actually he is almost pure white) eats 6+ lbs. of large carrots each week.
Over 300+ pounds per year.
He absolutely LOVES them, and they do seem to help keep his teeth clean.

Does that amount of raw carrots digest?
