What do you call this tool?

I consulted my Webster's this morning before making my post:

Spokeshave...a drawknife or small transverse plane with end handles for planing...

My antique one was called a spokeshave by my Dad who gave it to me...which is why I thought that was the correct term.

But SCORP... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I cannot find that term in the dictionary, whether spelled with a "C" or "K".

A scorp is used for holowing out. I use them for roughing out the indent of the the seats on winsor chairs.

JDgreen; Being an old carpenter too, don't tell me you don't watch cousin Norm Saturday mornings /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif One episode he demonstrated using a scorp out the boonies somewhere. I think he was helping to restore a cabin in one of the National Parks. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( It's actually a delicate work tool, though you can hog off a lot of wood quickly if you know how to use one. As others have said, I would look at the tools made specifically for debarking trees.
)

the power tools made for debarking logs dont leave a very nice finish on the wood, there mostly for removing bark to saw the logs, so depending on the application, the drawknife may still be the way to go, of course if your just cleaning them up to saw or for fenceposts then hit em with a power tool

Since I see the 'spokeshave' and 'drawknife' mentioned several times:

Spokeshave - metal frame with two handles holding a removable blade. Generally used for finish smoothing on rounds.

Drawknife - 1 piece with the ends bent to form handles. Used for roughing out.

Scorp - a carving knife with blade formed in a curve used to hollow out bowls etc.

At least that is the definitions I have seen and match the useds I have put them to.

roho - sounds familiar. When the grandkids complain about walking 3 blocks to school I tell them that we had to walk 10 miles to school and it was uphill both ways. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Oh yeah I got 2 of these scaper things from ebay.

Yeah, I loved growing up in rural Louisiana with middle income family(never reached over 4 digits in annual income but was happy with new shoes @ Easter & start of school! But U couldn't tell much different in poor kids and rich kids back then! Oh yeah, rich kids wore Levis and Converse tennis shoes & poor kids worn Tuff Nuts & Kids! Dah, drawknifes, etc! Maybe different names in different parts of the country! As I said once, back in La. a tank was a huge tub to water livestocks, & now that I'm in Tx, a tank is a pond! Or maybe it wa the size of the ranch that determind the tank! Ok Ok Drawknife or what ever, I still pulled a lots of bark off pine post with one! Now U talk about doing a number on u'r blue jeans! Straddle pine post all morning Saturday and stand U'r jeans up with dried pine rosin on them! Now that was fun!!!

I bid on and won a 12" Drawknife on Ebay. With S/H it cost me $19.70. I want to use it to skin poles to use in making a wood shed. I looked at the power one that goes on a chainsaw but that was way out of my budget; by 100s of dollars. Thanks for all of the info.
