Do you get a rebate or tax credit to help with the high initial cost of installation?
There is a federal tax credit. Some electric companies give a rebate, I need to call my utility this week to see what they do, if anything.

With my propane dealer charging me just over $4.50/gal for propane, I bought/installed a heat pump water heater. Which is 4x as efficient as the propane one. Time will tell how it works out.
Right now prices range from $1.59 to $4.13 from local suppliers according to current FakeBook posts in Lititz PA. We buried a 1,000 gallon LP tank a dozen years ago and Wifey watches for low prices. One time not long after burying the tank she had it filled for just under a buck a gallon. Before having our own tank, we couldn't shop and had to pay whatever the supplier was charging. We have around 2,700SF two story that we now heat for roughly $500 per year.

I did have a hybrid WH (GE Geospring) for a while. I LOVED it while it worked. It heated water inexpensively and dehumidified the basement at the same time. It was, however, problematic and eventually we ran it on resistance heat only after multiple compressor fails. My boss also had two of these. He had one with a red top and another with a black top like ours. He said the red top WH was trouble from the beginning and the black top lasted longer.

For our next WH I'd prefer another hybrid - but only after one of them has a great track record.

I had a stand alone hot water heat pump. A relay failed and cooked the unit after only a couple years. The company wouldn't do anything, I abandoned it.

I have a buried 500 gallon tank that my gas supplier says they own, it was put in by the previous owner. If I can save one tank of propane, the unit has paid for itself. I got a Rheem unit which seems to be highly rated. Earlier units were problematic and who repairs them?? Plumbers won't touch them as it has a refrigeration system in them. HVAC techs won't touch them as they don't know anything about them, and they are a plumbing system. I am not looking forward to the day it goes belly up. The Europeans have been using them for years, they should be reliable.

I used to get so many service calls on heat pump water heaters i never wanted one. As for propane, why is yours so high. Ours is less that $1.25 per gal here
