Can you identify this snake for me please? I hope it turns out to be poisonous but in retrospect it doesn't appear to be.

You don't show where you are but if you are in the southeast it may be a Brown Water Snake.

I vote thatiIt is a rat/corn snake they come in various colors depending on where they are totally harmless.

I agree. Don't know if that's the proper scientific term but we'd call that a corn snake around here. It is not only harmless to humans but is quite beneficial in terms of rodent control.

And its a beautiful creature to boot.

it looks like one of the saber-toothed-rattle-mocasins that are quite elusive. And if that doesnt help with identification - Just call it DEAD... LOL

Hey!! That looks a lot like my pet gopher snake. He escaped last week. OMG what did you do to him? :(

I was hopping it turned out to be poisonous because I hate killing a snake that's of use to my environment. Now I'll have to hate myself to make up for it and be more careful next time.

After investigating it a bit I agree with the corn or water snake assessment. I live n Alabama btw.

Thanks guys,

Even the poisonous snakes are helpful to your environment... They just carry some added risk.

Funny Story, We have a large Black Racer that lives under the porch and kills lots of rodents. Sometimes I see it sunning and I swear it has bulges from multiple varmints it has eaten recently. We also have an open carport and a Mazda Miata that lives its summer with the top down. One day I jump in the Miata to run to the parts store and about a mile from the house I hear hissing and see the snake peeking down from under the dashboard looking up at me! I pulled off of the road immediately and tried to chase it out of the car, but I only chase it further up into the dash. After an hour of waiting I drive the car home looking the whole time for the snake to slither out.... I then left the car under the carport for a week with the doors open. Haven't seen the snake since, so I'm not sure what happened to him, but he scared the crap out of me!

However, after having the rodents eat the wiring out of the dash of my TC18, I'd rather have the snakes around than the rodents....
