( Please elaborate on your thoughts re. plug in vs. splicing. Is there something I should be aware of (for future reference) if I need to do any splicing? )

Brian, it's not really a big deal, in my opinion, but if I had a late model truck equipped to just have a brake controller plugged in instead of having to splice wires, I'd probably go that way for convenience and a neater, cleaner install. However, if you have to splice wires (as I always had to do), if it's done right, you don't have a problem. In other words, I wouldn't hesitate to use either the Prodigy or the Voyager; I'd just go with the one that was easiest to install. You might want to look at the Tekonsha website and maybe look at the installation instructions, then get the one you like best.

Thanks Bird.

Since the trailer is coming with the Voyager, I'll start with that one. If I don't like it for whatever reason, I'll upgrade to the Prodigy.

I have had great success with using the brand made by Hoppy Mfg. I'm using their Impluse brake control with digital display features including error codes. I installed it on a 2004 Linclon and thankfully Ford hasnt changed their wiring schematics between their larger SUV/Trucks. The module was plug in all the way into the prewire harness provided by the factory under the dash. Its a nice unit and inexpensive and readily available in most large chain auto supply stores.

We've tryed most everything out there and YES there is a difference. I would have to give my vote also the prodigy. It's a little more money but for hauling heavier loads I haven't found anything to compare to it. Fords new integrated brake controller is the best yet of anything but you have to get an 05 Ford to get that one.

Most late model GM's come with a sub-harness and spare fuse for brake controllers.. makes hookup pretty easy..

Ford's have had the wiring harness built in since 94. Just hook up the wires and go. I think Chuck bought a Ford King Ranch. The wires will be just under the dash down under the right side of the steering wheel. If the previous owner didn't hook up the brake controller look in the glove box for the harness. If it isn't there let me know. I have three of them in my toolbox.

I do frequent trailering.. In my 2004 F150, I installed a Tekonsha Prodigy. I have tried others like Reese, etc and I really like my Prodigy and would not hesitate buying another one.
