I usually weld all my attachments because it is easier than drilling holes and putting in bolts, but there is nothing wrong with a properly bolted connection. As for hooks etc on FEL's, I like to weld on a reinforcing pad underneath the hook to spread the load a bit more than just putting on a fender washer with bolted connection. For D rings on a trailer, bolted would be just as good as welding and wouldnt damage the paint so I think I would go with bolted connection with a self locking nut.
