Why would I want to do that,I already know why you might think you would need to drill a hole at the end of a crack,but as I expained above,don't know why any body would need,or even want to do that on steel.

Cast iron,yeah,maybe,on say a potbellied stove,drill hole at ends of crack put bolts through holes,maybe dob up the crack with something,or maybe not if it was a finer crack.Cast iron is not steel,cast iron is hard to weld without cracking,even if there was no crack to begin with,

We are talking steel here,cast iron is history. No need to do that,unless your talking cast iron,the backhoe is made of steel.

Cause,I've read that years go.
But if your not familier with dye penatrant,you should look that up.

I can tell you this fact,when they find a crack on a piece of pipe in a power plant,they don't drill holes in it

Its either,ground out and dye checked [if its such that that can be done],or whole section is cut out.No hole drilling going on in anyplace I ever worked in regards to cracks.

I already said you got to grind your crack so you can weld it and a hole would just make that more difficult,we are not talking about how to prepare a joint for welding,we are discussing the need or not the need to drill a hole to stop crack from speading,[unless you want to change the subject?]

Just looking for a good referal who knows what they are doing. I have never welded anything over 1/2 inch and this looks like 3/4 or better...don't think my Lincoln Wirefeed will handle it.

If it were me, I'd contact one of the larger road construction companies in your area and ask what they would charge to have one of their mechanics weld it up. Those guys do this type of repair all the time on their own equipment.

Nope; not trying to no subject no how, so your saying no need to drill stop cracks in 'steel' correct ?, just cast steel ?

YES,steel period, cast steel or plate steel or anykinda steel.[unless it makes you feel better or something]

If you want a repair that you can bank on, call a professional welder with experience doing heavy equipment repair...like me. I'm afraid that you're about 700 miles outside of my usual service area....and then there's that whole green card thing....

Don't drill the ends of the crack. There's a good reason to drill out the ends of a crack but if you have to ask or are contemplating doing it for this specific repair then you should call a pro. That adage about a little knowledge being dangerous is quite true.

But like Cami said,if you need a crack in a backhoe or something like that fixed,it would probably be a lot cheaper for you to call on somebody who can actually fix it,[and it would save you alotta drilling time too]:laughing:
