Hello,
I have JD 410 Backhoe and one day while digging some roots I put a crack in the bucket up the side of one of the fingers 5-6 inches long. I also have been keeping a close eye on a hairline on one of the connecting arms between the ram and bucket that was welded before.

Who should I call, and how much should I expect to spend to weld this?

Thanks

First you might have to find a shop that does welding and get their rates.:)

Just looking for a good referal who knows what they are doing. I have never welded anything over 1/2 inch and this looks like 3/4 or better...don't think my Lincoln Wirefeed will handle it.

Phone book maybe, talk to a few full sevice type gas stations around where you live, fix it type shops.
As to cost, depends on what they gotta do,a crack in thick steel takes some time,if you want it done right.
Crack, you gotta go to the ends, and weld full pen on it or it will just grow, if you can weld on both sides of a crack, its easier,if you can't,you got to grind to where you can see ends, and get full pen from one side, just depends.

I use a drill motor to stop a crack before welding.

Anybody else ?

How do you know where the end of that crack really is?

I take a backyard guesstimate after a grinder, blow gun and mag glass (the eyes aren't what they use to), if I was getting paid for the job, i'd have it magnafluxed.

Either way, a drill stop is in order.

Seems like the hole drilling is just a waste of time to me.

Reason I say that is,your going to grind anyways, your going to grind what you can see with your eyes, your probably going to grind all the way through the metal where the crack is,so if,your relying on your eyes to drill the hole, just use your eyes to judge where the end of the crack is and than go a little futher with your grinder, plus you got a welding groove already made,if you got a hole its not ready to weld.

Now if you want to be sure, you get you some dye penatrant, comes in spray cans, can do it yourself, works better for finding cracks open to surface than mag particle, dye comes in one can, another can got the cleaner, another can has the powder[developer],look it up on the net if you've never heard of it,very simple to use, cheap, one set would last average crack looker many years.

I think that hole drilling thing started with cast iron bells and pot bellied stove, where it works, but the cracks in cast iron are generaly wider than in steel,in anycase, anyplace I ever was where crack repair was happening,no holes were drilled.:D
