Thanks all, the existing EMT conduit is ~1.16" OD, I think it's called 1 " EMT. Correct, because my main panel is full, was looking for a solution to upgrade the current breaker/wiring to support both the compressor and potentially a new welder. What I'm hearing is that I may have to install a small sub-panel at the work bench and run individual recepticals off of it. I was planning on pulling the existing 10ga wiring out of the conduit and pull 6-8 gauge in behind, it. thanks

Yes, Thomas, what you are suggesting is possible, if the EMT is big enough (I'd have my doubts as it is probably 1/2"...it would probably work in 3/4"), but I do not believe it is what the OP was proposing, per quote from his first post:

No, it would not legally work in 1/2 inch, that would exceed the wire max in those conduit sizes. 1" would work, but we don't know what size conduit he has. He might not be able to even put #8 or #6 wire at all in his existing conduit. Possibly if the conduit is 3/4, the wire insulation is rated at 90 degrees centigrade (THHN), and he is ok with #8...

This is your best solution. It is more work, but then you can be sure it is done right. Trust me you don't want electrical issues. BIL just moved back into his house after a year because of electrical issues. If the investigation finds out that it's because of faulty wiring that you have done yourself, your insurance may be void. Make sure you call somebody to physically look at it, to make sure everything is OK.
