Weekend \'Cabin\'

Hi All,

Attached is the spot where I want to build a weekend cabin. Nothing too large, maybe 1200-1400 sq/ft. Electic and water are already at the property as there is an old homesite. I want to build something that will add value to the property without spending too much money.

Has anyone done this recently and can anyone provide ideas / thoughts / links. My son and I can do most of the work. Any experience with Morton-style buildings for this purpose? My neighbor is building a morton-style hunting cabin but it doesn't have any internal walls. It's basically a 30x60 pole barn with insulation and a crawl space. (The foundation is all that is there so far. They plan on finishing the week of July 4th).

Thanks,

Re: Weekend \'Cabin\'

That is a beautiful spot to build just about anything.
Good luck with it.

Very pretty piece of property. You'd have to be a really poor builder to create something that would ruin that spot.

Re: Weekend \'Cabin\'

I have never built a small cabin but have often thought about what I would do if I actually had a place like that. I believe that I would put up a small building on piers and then side it with that wood siding that looks like logs to make it look like a log cabin.

If I ever hit the Power Ball...............................

Thanks all for the comments.

Gary, you underestimate my poor building skills /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ozarker, if you live in the Ozarks, you already have access to some of the best cabin spots around. I love Southern Missouri, just too far to drive on the weekends.

Attached is the pirogue that my son and I built. It looks better from a distance than it does close up. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Fun project though.

Re: Weekend \'Cabin\'

I put up a 30'x40' prefab metal building (something similar to Morton) on my land which I don't live on yet. I built it for a shop/storage building rather than for living. However, I did insulate it and put in a bathroom and small kitchen area and some furniture so that we can go up on weekends if we want. You could build interior walls throughout if you wanted. Mine is built on a concrete slab.
Functional but not as asthetically pleasing as a traditional cabin.

I certainly live in the Ozarks but all I own of it is this little 3 acres where my house is. No need for a cabin but I do have access to the Gasgonade River. (see attached)

Re: Weekend \'Cabin\'

Ozarker, Very nice. I actually live in the KC area on 1/3 of an acre and have to drive to NW MO to enjoy the outdoors (and my tractor). Wife won't give up city life except for (some) weekends.

I found a site that is a good resource for small, framed cabins. Country Plans

Still interested in other ideas, though.

Thanks for comments,

Ever since that post about a Yurt appeared, I keep getting a request for a cookie from yurts.com.
Wish something could be done about that /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Re: Weekend \'Cabin\'

I grew up in Kansas City and all my family is still there. When I retired from the Army a few years ago I just did not want to go back to the city. I got an opportunity to buy this place and did it.

I go to the city 4 or 5 times a year just to remind myself why I don't want to live there again.

My wife grew up on a farm in Iowa so she really didn't care one way or the other. Her sisters are in Omaha so we all meet in KC a couple of times a year so the girls can spend lots of money shopping and eating on the Plaza.

Re: Weekend \'Cabin\'

Ozarker,

Funny you mention your wife growing up on a farm in Iowa, so did mine! She grew up on a 160/acre farm in NE Iowa, but doesn't have a yearning to live on one again. Oh well, I love visiting there each year.

Don't want that option..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But I will set it to block all from that site.

Re: Weekend \'Cabin\'

Mine isn't interested in farming as well. And she has no desire to drive my Yanmar. She says it isn't a "real" tractor anyway.

I don't go up there much anymore. Her sisters all live in Omaha and her parents are both gone. The girls own the farm but dad had remarried. So the farm is rented out and his widow is living off the proceeds. We will sell it after she passes.
