Any idea what this plant is? It is in various areas around my property. These pictures are from an alfalfa field where there are large patches. The plant is about 5 or 6 inches tall. The bees love the small purple flowers.

I think it is henbit. We have lots of it around our fruit trees. It's about the first thing to grow in the spring, then disappears in summer.

possibly a member of the "mint" family .... crush a leaf in your fingers and smell it ... some even smell like skunk ...

I agree with both posters. Henbit is a member of the mint family and that's what I think it is also.

I looked up henbit and found references to a related plant - purple deadnettle. I think that's it. It is in the mint family. Thanks!

It looks like the Spotted Horse Mint we have growing wild in Florida.

All mint family members have distinctive SQUARE STEMS. Checking the stems should narrow down your search.

ditto...square stems usually = mint family...which also includes members of the Bergamot (AKA bee balm) flowering plants...
