i have a jd 170 lawn tractor. how& wear does the height adjustment spring attach, the lever is on left side &ankle high.

What spring are you referring to? Is it the large 'Lift assist' spring? This is the spring that makes it easier to lift the deck from it's lowered set height position.

If so, one end is hooked to the frame near the front axle beam. The other end is hooked to the slotted link that connects to the lift lever.. The spring has significant tension, and is difficult or dangerous to install.

no, its a small spring that attaches somewhere on or around a notched cam device that holds pressure on the mower deck height adjustment lever which is located on the lower left fender.
