I'm interested in building a water pump which will attach to the 3-point on my Kubota. Nothing big, just enough to draft water out of the creek and supply a hoseline when I burn piles. Has anyone ever done anything like this?

Mount one of these on a carryall...with a jackshaft driven by the PTO...?

Belt drive pump from Northern

I use the 2" version with an electric motor to paint the ice on the hockey rink.

Nice work. I don't know how I missed that one; it should be just the ticket. I'm thinking I could build a platform to mount it on, short shaft from tht PTO to a carrier bearing on the platform, v-belt pulley, I could even change the v-belt size to make it work. Excellent!

Any other ideas?

Naaaaah. I'm short on ideas, but long on curiosity. Please send pictures when you finish your pump installation. I'm collecting ideas for a small 3ph platform with PTO powered pulley and quick change ability for tools. I need a 3" trash pump ($69 at HF), a big honking car alternator for welding, a 5000w generator head, 13cfm compressor ($99 at HF), perhaps a boom sprayer pump, perhaps a 2500 psi pressure washer pump, and anything else I can think of later. It would be great if I could change from 1 to the other in 5 minutes or less.

I have read quite a few threads where folks want to use their pto to drive various items and the question that keeps coming to mind is the fuel consumption to power some of the items. I would think that there must be a more economical way to power a lot of them. Maybe I am missing something and maybe my perspective is a little warped because of the amount of gas consumed by my older 45 hp JD. I think I would invest in a smaller Honda engine, mount it on a platform or trailer that can be carried or moved around by my tractor to remote locations and used as a universal power source for many of the items.

I guess if his brush fires don't get tooo out of hand too often...
I did find that it takes less fuel to run my 20 hp Farmnought pullin' a 16 hp mower for 42 minutes than it does to run the wifes MTD (yuckk) for two and a half hours.Easier on my tail bone too..

I think it would be a false economy to buy a Honda engine to power the pump. The initial cost would be greater, and by BX2230 doesn't burn much fuel (1 1/2 gallons after 4 hours of general work).

Don't forget about justifying the tractor to the CFO! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(Look, honey, at all the things the tractor will do...)

As far as a universal mounting plarform for your belt driven appliances, consider using Uni-strut as a base, perpendicular to the jack-shaft. Drop the nuts into the channel, a quarter turn to lock them in the slot, slide the unit until the belts are tight, then cinch it down.

Justifying the tractor to the Wifey? Let me share with you how this went...

We were at the State Fair a few weeks ago. We walked briskly past the Kubota Dealer, and I mentioned that it would be nice to have something like this.

On the way back we lingered a little longer. I looked at the BX2230, looked at the brochure, and the salesman came over. He thought it was just a courtesy to talk to me, and at that point it was. Then we were standing there, I'm jokingly telling my wife how useful it would be, and she said, "Yeah, it really would be. You could smooth out the field and keep it mowed, and dig ditches and all sorts of things".

And so it came to pass that I ended up with a new BX2230.

Not so bad, eh?

I agree that it would be very economical if you can get 4 hours on 1 1/2 gallons of fuel. I might get 4 hours on 3 1/2 gallons of fuel. To use the tractor the way you described makes sense. Buying a Honda motor that would do all of the jobs that the other folks want to do would probably cost in the neighborhood of $700.
