I have an area about 50' x 20' where water sits in the spring or after heavy rain. 3 surrounding properties slope in this general direction and it is the lowest spot on my property. ( so regrading the water away is not an option)

I have thought of 2 ideas and want to know if anyone can add to them or suggest a better option.

1. Dig out the whole area a foot or two in depth, replace with clear gravel, fabric and top dress with top soil.

2. Sloping grade toward Some kind of french drain / culverts, four or five feet deep, 3 or 4 feet wide.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Does the water have any place to go? A french drain would divert the water to a place that is lower if such a place exists. It sound like you have clay soil so putting in dry wells of gravel would only work until they fill up with water since water does not soak into your ground very fast.
Regrading with additional soil so that the water would not stand there may be option. Good luck Rick

There are enough pond threads on here that turned out pretty good. You can call that your little nature sanctuary. The one issue might be not making it so deep that it could be a liability if someone fell in. Downside of some ponds might be attraction for mosquitos.. Which could attract birds...

Boy, you know what I love about this forum. When I get a problem and plan on posting a question, somepne else has the same problem.

I have three properties draining thorough mine towards a storm drain. During a heavy rain it is a small creek. I found a soft spot about 250' behind the house and started digging a trench. I found a spot about 1 foot down that was draining into my trench. I dug in that direction, more water. After about 70 feet of trench, 3 ft deep, I decided to take a break. I came back an hour later and the trench was FULL of water. I dug a big pit besides it and filled it with rock then extended the trench to the pit. Holy smokes, talk about running water. I back filled and dropped another couple of yards on it. I think I may have to trench it to the road, about 350 ft of trench.

druster,

How high is the next lowest place, and if it could drain there would it have any place to go.

If you are stuck with the layout, you could install an automatic pump to a small drain in the middle to pump and keep it dried out most of the time. Maybe even a windmill pump.
