Water hose ends

Kinda baffled. Back in the 80's and 90's I put many a hose replacement end on hoses and never had a problem. Most of them were those plastic green ones with two screws. The last ten years or so it's like they don't fit hoses properly any more and leak terribly. No matter whether it's the plastic ones or the metal ones with hose clamp or what hose it goes on.

I am sure you know this, but just in case, many of the newer hoses have an anti-pinch line extruded on the inside of the hose that has to be cut back for splices and ends to function. If you try to splice without cutting it out, the new fittings will always leak.

I use flush cutters to nip through the attachment point and then peel it back with a knife or a screwdriver, cutting as much of the excess as I can until the line is free longer than the new hose fitting. I am sure that there is a better way.

I'm not aware of that. At least I don't think my hoses have that. For some reason the replacement ends don't fit as tight in the hoses as they used to. Maybe the hoses were made in USA and fittings in China?

they come in different sizes, use ones that are relatively tight fit to your hose.

Thanks for telling the name of the anti-pinch line. What are they supposed to keep from getting pinched?

@stuckmotor Yes, I had no idea what marketing calls it. (Apparently it is an anti-kink "dowel") It is about an 1/8" in diameter on my hoses. I believe the idea is that it keeps the hose from kinking, but but it also means that folding it in half doesn't shut the water off either.

This one also has two little fangs, which aren't going to be happy campers in a splice;

By the time I've rounded up the items necessary to remove the anti- pinch line and repair the hose, I'm usually too exasperated to think it has any purpose other than irritating me. The hoses that have them do seem to kink less.

If I ever encounter any of those "fangs" they'll probably be called a few names they're not used to hearing.
