Just surface rust on the steel. Forget about it and move on.. Maybe you need to get under your pickup truck and look at the frame (if it has one that is)...

For ground contact treated lumber will last longer. When on a trailer bed I am not sure. I do think if the wood is treated with deck or fence maintenance products every once it a while treated and untreated does last longer. Especially if a person gets energetic enough to to treat both sides of the lumber.

The diesel and oil coating will definitely help preserve the wood,
but boy oh boy does it get slippery when wet.

It makes a difference. We have wood on several above ground dog kennels and elevated steps.

Remember that wood doesn't float in the air. It has attachment points that support it, and those attachment points retain water and can hold microscopic organisms. When those supporting points rot, the structure fails. For these reasons, you definitely want to use treated lumber when dealing with things that are going to be repeatedly exposed to the environment.

Oh...both sides were treated. Three heavy coats were put on the bottom of the boards before installation but I was by myself at that time and didn't record it...as it is the same "action" as what my wife recorded when I did the topside. After reinstalling the wood, I then put two coats on the topside, which she recorded. We will retreat the top again soon and then most likely once a year after that.

Hopefully this won't be too bad...but we will see. I certainly didn't want it to rot out prematurely. The only wood I have ever noticed being slippery were some wood steps on an above ground kennel that had algae grow on it, and then I bleached it...and while it was breaking down it was slippery...but after it was rinsed off and dried again, it was no longer slippery.

I take it you have never seen what unpainted steel that is exposed to the elements looks like after a decade...so let's not forget that this short 37 second video clip that shows the rust and unpainted steel was made just 2 days after ownership. Covering unpainted steel on a trailer with wood and then painting the visible areas of the trailer after the wood is put on is done is simply unacceptable. They know customers expect the steel to be painted in order to preserve it, which is certainly why they painted all the visible areas.

The underside of my truck was treated with protective coatings at the factory, and it is still in excellent shape 17 years and more than 330,000 miles later.

Untreated pine? Yeah, that wouldn't happen up here. The road salt we use would eat that thing alive.
