Loader Wasps in Deere Loader

Went to put my H120 Loader back on my Deere 1026 yesterday afternoon and got a rude surprise. Yellowjackets had built at least TWO nests in the top tubes! I picked up two cans of wasp spray and sprayed as far down the tubes as I could. Went out this morning to finish the hookup and move it, while it was still too cold for the wasps.

Turns out the top tubes are essentially sealed, except where they connect to the vertical supports for the loader. I did flush several hundred wasps out of the drain holes; but thinking it may be winter before I'm completely rid of 'em.

Any suggestions appreciated......

Just occasionally spray some diesel up into the supports. The fumes and oiliness of the diesel will deter wasp, etc from using the area for nesting. The first year I had my tractor shed built, brown wasp built nest everywhere. I filled my garden sprayer with diesel and sprayed them down. It not only killed them but so far in 9 years, no wasps have built back in the shed

Seal tubes..... I have problems with yellowjackets a times, usually they have ground nests in my area... When I locate them, I put a clear pyrex bowl upside down over nest and make sure it seals to ground ( at night when all YJ are tucked in for the night) and in a week or two all activity in nest stops... usually within a few weeks later a "night creature" digs the nest and eats what is in nest.... Bye-Bye Mr Yellowjacket...

Also note they can take offense of you disturbing nest and can swarm you and cause very serious injury to you ...

Yes yellow jacket traps work and yes sprays work, and yes be careful ....

You can put some Sevin dust in there so they crawl through it when returning. In a couple days the queen and workers will be dead.

Never had problems with wasps in the loader arms - think they are pretty much sealed. HOWEVER - the pipes, tubes, channels of my implements have provided unwelcome surprises several times. Next time I'm in town - I'll get a couple cans of expanding foam and seal off all the tubes I can find. Last time - I had half a dozen yellow jackets fly up the left leg of my shorts.

I - like you - laugh about it now - - nothing funny, at all, at the time. I dam near excised the family jewels - getting them out and/or squashing them.

Once the wasp are gone spray FEL with WD40 which also helps to keep the mud wasp away.

I use Tempo which I get from the county weed and pest. It doesn't kill them as quickly as the wasp spray but it keeps more from coming back. For most areas spraying once a year takes care of the problem.

I've got some kind of wasp here - don't think its a mud wasp. They will lay an egg or two in a tiny crack and then seal it all up with a sticky substance. The sticky stuff is like a combination of pine pitch and bees wax. By early fall every small crack shows signs of the "sticky stuff".

This was just an interesting thing to notice up until they started using the key slots on my open equipment as hatching areas. One really got my Polaris ATP - finally heated the key in a cigarette lighter - jammed in the key slot - its bonded there for life now. The tractor has a cover plate oner the key slot. I have the key permanently "locked into" my JD riding mower also.

The "stuff" is thick, yellow, sticky, smells somewhat like pine pitch - - I worked on the lawn mower for an hour trying to get the stuff out - no joy. Perhaps remove the key module - into an ultrasonic cleaner with something like turpentine.

Just something to watch out for. My only two open key units have "been gotten" - so nothing for me to worry about any more.

Gasoline has always been my go-to solution for Yellow Jackets. Night-time application would be prudent.
