That there is a new federal law coming down the pipe that will require all tires 10 years old and older to be replaced. It seems like a crazy thing to mandate, but then it's supposed to be a federal law so crazy isn't a barrier!

Is this in fact something they are thinking about or just rumor passed about by us old guys?

In my opinion it should be law. I tow trailers for a part time living and I will not tow anything with tires more than 6 years old.

Our local tire shops will not work on a tire 10 years old or older. I had a extra spare tire for my boat trailer that was 10 years old and it needed a new valve stem. They would not touch it at 3 different places I took it to.

Old tires are a ticking time bomb and put everyone in danger.

Ill trade that tire law for a stupid seat belt law. eg not wearing MY seatbelt doesnt endanger anyone else. but running around with 10 yo+ tires is an accident waiting to happen. and when it does, that sort of tire failure is generally catastrophic and likely to involve other partys,

so not such a bad idea IMHO

Oh brother........ I know, I know, its for the children !!!!!!

Schmism, move here to NH. We have no seat belt law (for adults in personal vehicles) and no helmet law.

I couldn't find where an actual Federal Mandate has been passed, but I found NHTSA recommends the replacement of the tires.

I've seen brand new tires fail... I don't think we need another law. Nobody can list all the ones we have already.

our local tire shops won't patch / plug, air or remount anything over 6ys old... well.. a tractor tire.. yeah.. but nothing road rated....

now.. if the govt wants my tractor tires over 10ys.. then they got a problem.. and so do i... some of mine are multi decades upon decades old..

Replacing the trailer tires on my boat trailer this year after 8 years for the same reason. I don't want to be one of those guys sitting on the side of the freeway with a blowout due to lack of attention.
