That is the kind of law that would be posted in every tire shop.
This sounds to me like the foil hat group needs to go out and buy a new gun.

Bias ply tires can still be good and safe after 10 years.
We have way too many laws as it is. We don't need another nanny state law telling us when we need to replace our tires!

I had a 2000 Silverado, and in 2010 I decided that even though the truck only had 38,000 miles on it and there was lots of tread life in the tires, it was just time to replace them due to age, So I bought 4 new tires, I did keep the spare, it was never on the ground. less than a month later the truck was wrecked. A lady ran a stop light and T boned the truck which my wife was driving. Fortunately she was not hurt, and neither was the lady in the Toyota..(her car was totaled and she has the airbags to thank for her life). So the morale to this story if you just replace your tires because they are old, you are liable to have your vehicle wrecked soon after:D Of course I have good tires on my 2010 Silverado now:)

Good point. It does sound like it's more baloney than steak.

I don't have a tin foil hat, can I still get a new gun?

As a Firefighter/Paramedic for a number of years I have seen the results of old tires blowing out on the Freeway. Motorhomes and vacation trailers that sit unused for most of their lives are the worst. How many times have you seen a light trailer or hay trailer sitting at the side of the road with a tire blown? It's because they have OLD tires that don't hold up.
The tire repair guys know the dangers of old tires. They are the people responsible for repairing old tires. The Liability for damages and injuries caused by failure of old repaired tires can be expensive. My guess is they are the movement behind the regulations suggestion.

Copied from the net, but confirmed by personal experience with 10 year old tires with lots of tread left:

"When a mechanic .. says [your tires] have been vulcanized, this is not a bogus use of a tire term. What your mechanic sees is the effects of heat on your tires, which can prematurely age them and render them useless over time. Vulcanized tires are hard and inflexible, which is the very thing you don't want when it comes to wet pavement. A vulcanized tire can lose its grip on the pavement, potentially sending you out of control until you can get some traction back. Vulcanized tires need to be replaced."

Last summer when it was in the high nineties here, I was sitting on the deck and i thought someone had slipped up and shot at me! Scared the $hirt out of me! After I settled down, changed my shorts,I found that a tire on my old GN had exploded. It caught the evening sun just right I guess.
A few weeks later, I went to hookup on the UTV trailer and noticed a gaping hole in the spare mounted on the side of the trailer. Both tires were around 8 years old with 90% tread and had literally explode. I am very thankfull I wasn't on the road loaded with the GN, could have been tragic.

Really made me think about running old tires just because they have "life" left. Went on a buying spree and re-tired everything I run on the hiway including spares.

I really don't need Big Brother to tell me what is safe and what is not, but maybe some people do!!

I have a 2002 37foot 5th wheel camper with about 9-10 years on tires that show no sign of cracking or checking and with almost all it's thread on yet. Sadly I just changed them at a high cost. But I know one blowout would wreck the fiberglass and who knows what else and if I end up up the ditch or roll it over it would be a worse mess. I hope all this 8 year limit stuff isn't just a sales pitch.

The when to replace automobile and truck tires question has been around for years, for example on Friday May 9th, 2008 ABC News Show 20/20 ran a special report on the dangers of old tires. Tires purchased by ABC News for the report although sold as being new were from 4-14 years old.

Ford, which has had its share of about tire safety problems, is urging consumers to replace their tires after six years. Tires degrade even when they're not in use, the company says, echoing the claims of safety advocates who have been pressing federal regulators to take action on the issue.

The tire industry disagrees and says that tires are safe as long as the tread depth is a minimum of 1/16th of an inch, no matter what the age, and as long as there are no visible cuts, signs of uneven wear, bulges or excessive cracking. Other trouble signs are if tires create vibration or excessive noise.

As stated by a tire installer, "Newly installed on the vehicle, manufactured on what date, your guess is as good as mine". So in reality we may be riding around on what is really a 14 year old tire when it was only installed on the vehicle as a new tire last week. This is really comforting when traveling at 80 MPH.

I don't have a fear or foresee the Federal Government enacting legislation mandating consumers change tires after a certain number of years have elapsed. I do see them enacting legislation to insure CONSUMERS when purchasing NEW TIRES are sold NEW TIRES not something that has been setting on a warehouse shelf for 14 years.

After learning how to read the date codes on a tire, I get the newest ones I can find, just like with batteries. I will get one with the newest production date I can find.
If the tire is going on the road, I look at it suspiciously if it is over 5-6 years old.
