The whole learning point of this thread is that if there's a problem with the tube between your rad bottle and the radiator cap neck you will have the same result as the OP. Rad bottle is full. Radiator is not. So unless you are removing the radiator cap every time you open the hood you are susceptible to the problem he has.
We don’t know for certain which tube or hose failed. An L4701 has an oil cooler hose that carries coolant from a low point in the engine water jacket to the oil cooler. If this hose were to become punctured, the block would completely drain and the radiator would drain to a level even with the bottom of the water pump inlet. My unconfirmed suspicion is this particular hose was compromised. A failed hose between the radiator and recovery jug would not drain the system more than about halfway down the top radiator tank, after which the system would cool just as well as an older system without a recovery tank.
In the absence of the OP this is all speculation, but would fit in with the facts we have.
