Tractor
1811 Hydro
I have been having to put a small ammount of gas in the carb to get it started. When it's running, it runs great. Took it to a dealer and was told I had to pay $1500. + for a valve replacement. Was told it was not holding enough compression. I understand Cub Cadets arn't cheap but this seams high...... What do you thinK?

I don't know enough to really help you, but welcome to the forum!
If you pour a little gas in the carb, does it continue to run until you shut it down? Or does it die when it burns the fuel you poured in? If it continues to run, I suspect it's not a valve problem. We need a little more info on your tractor. We know it's a Cub, but we need to know the model and any other info that you may think will help.

Please be more specific on the machine, year, engine, size, model number, etc etc etc

Cub makes lawn mowers, garden tractors and utility diesel tractors. The answers you get will be more useful if we know more about it!

OK, it's a 1811 hydro and I beleive it's a 1983. The tractor was givin to me and I don't know a lot about it. As I said, when it's running it runs great. Getting it started is the hard part. Still have to pour gas "not much" in the carb to get it started. By doing this, will this hurt the engin? Also, thanks for the reply. This is a pretty cool site...

If you have to manually "feed it" some fuel to start, I'd be looking first at the carburetor, to see if it actually contains gas in its fuel bowl.

When you crank the engine to start, intake suction is supposed to be able to draw fuel from the carb. Maybe the carburetor leaks and is going dry between running times?

However, manually drizzling some fuel into the carb shouldn't harm the engine, as long as you don't overdo it (and don't blow yourself up in the process!). I used to have to do that all the time to my old Blazer, any time it had sat for an extended period of time.

Thre ignition system may be producing a weak spark and that requires additional mixture enrichment or you may have a poorly adjust carb.

Check the spark first. Remove the center wire from the distributor cap, hold it near a good ground and try to start the tractor. You should see a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, the color of lightning.(Not bluish red, orangey or yellowish, FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE!) If you don't, check the points for burning, pitting, corrosion, etc and make sure the point gap is correctly set. IF you have the requsite spark then, and only then, would I'd suspect the fuel system.

Does it have a choke and are you using it to start? If you are then your carb may just need an adjustment of the idle needle or it may be dirty and need rebuilding (95% of a rebuild is the cleaning of the carb passages). Get a manual for your tractor and adjust the carb per the instructions.

I had the same issue on a tiller, had to put a squirt of gas in the carb in order to get it to run then it would run like a champ. The problem turned out to be a carburetor so replaced it and it works great now.
