take the total weight of the rtv and double it .then add a few hundred pounds to that and that will give you the size winch you need.for a machine that heavy i wouldn't go with anything less than 4k. when it's on dry ground and your not stuck thats one thing but when you bog it down in the mud you add lots of resistance to it and that doubles the weight of the utv. i would say get a 4k and make sure you use a snatch block that adds pulling power to the winch. the front and rear mounts are nice i had that setup on my hpx. the only problem i had was while i was in the prosecc of getting stuck going back and forth it packed mud into the reciever hitch and i couldn't get the winch to mount up in the rear plus it was under water and mud so i couldn't really get down there to clean it out so it rendered the rear hook up useless when i really needed it most.now it did come in handy when i was pulling other out the holes or pulling on trees.and one time i was broke down and could only get the trailer to the rear of the unit so i used it to pull the hpx up on the trailer.if you do get the front and rear setup put a plug or something inside the reciever hole to keep it clear when you need it.

I've already had to use my Warn RT40 (4000lb) winch several times this year due to the late rains and muddy conditions. I don't have your brand of UTV so I won't comment on your request but I do want to advize you to buy a snatch block, this one was from either HF or TSC and several lengths of good rope and keep them stowed on board for use when you do get stuck. In most of my stuck situations there hasn't been a tree or similar object anywhere near directly in front of my Mule in which to lash up to so setting the rope and snatch block signifigantly straightens out the winch wire and allows for a far more even re-wind (90 degrees to the bumper is the most ideal) without constantly binding the wire on one side of the winch. Snatch blocks are a bit pricey but when your in a stuck situation, money just doesn't seem to matter-except in getting that pricey UTV out in one piece.;)

something good to carry too is a mobile home anchor it will screw into the ground as deep as 4' and works pretty good for a pulling point if there isn't a tree or stump around. most times around here there are trees but sometimes not as close as i would like them so i have been known to carry over 200' of heavy duty straps. one time i had to use all my straps and all the cable on the winch to get to a tree.the anchor would have come in handy then but i didn't have one .now i have 4 of them in my shed just incase i lose one.

Great idea on the MH anchors. I also have some wide straps I bought off ebay and they are always in the wrong place in my garage, always having to move them to get to what I'm hunting. I'll store them under the hood of my RTV and then if the need comes up I'll know where they are and if I need them on RTV they'll be there. Two great ideas in one day and one post. Thanks.

something else i have found to be of good use is jumper cables.i had a solenoid switch go out on my winch one time and when it goes out you have a dead winch but a quick fix for it is some jumper cables .you can connect them to the battery and then touch them on your winch to run it .if you wanna spool in hook it +to+ if you wanna spool out just reverse the wires and go from pos to negative and the winch will turn in reverse. i lowned out my jumper cables at a atv park one time and didn't get them back .i also carry a little stubby tool kit that has all the sockets and stuff i need to do a switch replacement in the woods .i carry two extra solenoids for backups and they can be swapped out in 30 minutes but the jumper cables are faster. when we go ride and something breaks dwn they all come to me and ask if i have this or that and so for i had everything they needed.i carry silicone/diectric grease/grease/straps/ switchs . a tool kit.6 or 7 bottles of water/two bottles of slime"a must have" some fix-a-flat to inflate the tires . a fold up ton and a half coma long/snatch block/can of starter fluid and a few bic lighters .a bayonet from one of my ak's.1 gallon ziploc bag of towels .and a quart bag of assorted bolts and nuts. and a few other things too .i keep it all in a pelican water proof box in the bed of my rhino.oh i forgot about my shake to charge flashlight that way i never have to worry about batteries all i have to do is shake the lite and it's ready to go.it ain't the brightest light but when it's dark anything is better than nuthing. i'm a prepper at home and store stuff so it's like second nature for me to have a prep box when we go ride. i forgot to mention if you can't reach your battery with your jumper cables just connect them to the power input side of the dead switch and that will give you all the curent you need.

Check the Lewis Winch....runs off a chain-saw.4,000-8,000lbs.

Take a look at Viper winches... put one on my RTV900 and love it. They are highly rated on the 4 wheeler/atv sites, and reasonably priced. I also went with the optional amsteel cable... much easier to use than steel cable.

Thanks everyone for help.
Bought a Champion winch from Advance Auto (Had a $30 off coupon on a $100 purchase) and rec'd it a couple of days ago. Bought the adapter plate from Harbor Freight ($49 less 20% off coupon) that fits in the Reece hitch so I can put it in either front or back hole or remove it when not using it or even put it on another vehicle with a Reece hitch, got it Monday. Now just working on attaching it all together.

I would be very interested in seeing how you do the wiring, so the winch can quickly/easily be moved from front to back or vehicle to vehicle.

Also, my RTV 500 has a short reese receiver which I've seen others mention here. Because of that a normal 2 inch hitch won't fit unless you cut it off or drill a new whole. Does the 1140 have this same issue? If so, does the plate you purchased fit without problems in both the front and rear?

I haven't determined my wiring plan but will post when I study it and decide. I don't plan on mounting the wired controller any where, I'll hand hold it when used.
I'd tried a reece type hitch on my RTV1140 in the back and the hole was to short. My plan is to drill holes at the right depth, my neighbor cut his off.
The one I got from Harbor Freight slid right into the front one with depth to spare, the front is deeper than the back, haven't tried it on the back yet.
Will update with pictures as I make progress. Not sure how to attach winch to mounting plate yet. Need more pictures from others or more pondering or more advise from my brother in law, the UTV specialist.
