Greetings,

Was I surprised this afternoon when a friend texted me a picture of a brand new Kubota product. Its a 4 gallon Kubota wet/dry vacuum with a peak hp of 4 hp.

He saw it at a big box store in Kansas City. Official color shows on the box and made by Kubota.

Now I'm not sure if this is a good sign or a bad sign. A wet/dry vac for $25 to $30 just doesn't seem to fit with the Kubota reputation.

Lets be clear . . Its 7 amp and its not a toy. Why would Kubota be doing something like this?

It would have to have a 220 plug on it to be 4 hp!

This drives me nuts! It's like the candy bars at the checkout of the Canadian Tire store are the best money makers (per area) of anything in the store.

People will impulse buy that shop vac just because it says Kubota on it, and they will make a HUGE profit on that stupid vaccume!

It's good business but doesn't help them make a better tractor. I think it detracts from their core business. Like all the toys, belt buckles, coasters and yes even kitchen tools, at the JD dealer!

They make those for all the people on these forums that use them to avoid having to change their hydro oil when they do filters only. LOL.

Again, my point is pretty basic. This Kubota vacuum was selling for $25.00 at a Costco. It is not a higj profit item like a hat or tshirt used for name recognition and marketing purposes. A wet dry vac for $25.00 has no financial incentive for kubota tp produce but a even a junk manufacturer would have very little motivation by the time Costco takes yheir share. Just having the name Kubota on it has to be worth $25.00 to Kubota to even be associated with it.

Kubota doesnt do "low ball". A cap or tshirt at a dealer locatoon is one thing for $15 or $25. This product makes zero business sense. All they can do is lose reputation gains.

I would not read much into it, certainly not anything negative. They must see a point to doing it -- licensing revenue -- taking a page from John Deere, which has turned this into a big business. You will find the Deere name/logo licensed on all sorts of products, and apparently it's a big revenue stream for Deere. Kubota is probably following suit since they have a very recognizable brand. Next to Deere, it's probably the next most recognized tractor brand in recent years.

They have been selling Kubota vacs at places like Costco and Sams Club for many years now (at least as far back as 2011 when I started paying attention). I have seen a few other non-tractor-related Kubota branded products in stores, like toys, tools, and toolboxes. Lowes and Home Depot in Canada have the Kubota vacs too.

Greetings s219,

I'm quite familiar with the many franchise branding products are world is immersed in. And like you say, John Deere has shirts and hats and key chains and . . . you name it lol. But even on clearance pricing at a TSC John Deere items have considerable value unless its the trinkets or advertising items.

I wouldn't say anything if Kubota branded a high quality wet dry vac with a high quality price which is even reduced down for some reason.

But when you see a $25 wet dry vac for sale at a costco . . . that is the type of thing that would have a "polaroid" type name on it because Polaroid is out of business and the name was bought for name recognition on very inexpensive stuff. My poiny is . . Kubota is a thriving business with a high quality reputation for great products.

Their name recognition is valuable and their reputation is admirable.

You might expect John Deere would have one for $79 on sale somewhere . . but not $25. My issue is . . . there us no financial motivation in it for Kubota. Its not money . . Because if they made it themselves they'd be selling tjem to Costco for $10. NO profit. If someone else msde thrm and Kubota lets its name be used . . they might get 50 cents or a buck . . No profit.

And its not good advertising or to increase name recognition . . just the opposite.

My point is simply that there is no reason or motivation I could even guess at . . for Kubota to do such a thing. You wouldn't see jd or massey or yanmar do it.

Its not innovative . . its not clever or creative . . its just illogical as a business decision. We all do things that others mightvwonder at. Apparently Kubota chose to do something that is a no-win decision . . something they've never been known for. Lol

What motivation is there for Deere to brand those junk throw away riding mowers sold at the box stores??
