WalMart Shoplifting

OK, what is Combat Shopping?

Daughters used to Power Shop, I sat in the car for that. But Combat Shopping??

Canuck context - no actual combat, though sometimes it feels like that  to a non-shopper like me.

I'll say to the wife - "You need to keep your elbows up, going into the corners" (....went to a fight, and a hockey-game broke out !) about competitive shopping. It's just my sarcastic reference to civility declining, even more than normal, once major-discounts are on the table.... or for that matter, at the Costco food-sample table.....

Big Sale day here traditionally was Boxing Day - that's when people lined up for deep discounts. My sis took my brother-in-law (definite non-shopper) along last Boxing Day as she needed his muscle for a new TV. She'd warned him, but he was just shaking his head watching people's behaviour....

Amazon it THE best place I know of to shop. And I do about 90% of my shopping right there.

Just a reminder, this thread is 10 years old.

On that point, and reading through this thread, reminded me of a conversation a long time back (circa 1990) with a guy I worked with. He was describing a driving trip stateside with a friend of his; they went to buy beer. Stopped at 711 (or equivalent) store. His buddy goes up to the door (daytime), it won't open. Had to use a high-security large turnstile on the front of the store - say what you want on the intercom, drop money in, wait for the turnstile to rotate back with the case of beer and change.

At first, they thought it was a scam, never ever having seen a store like that. They got their beer, but laid down tracks fast out of that neighbourhood....

There can be issues at the delivery-end, but that is another advantage Amazon has - no customer physically on premises to cause trouble amongst product on-offer.

One of the big banks within walking distance from work has a chambered foyer to get in and out... just like the local jail.

You open the first door and walk in and it closes... they you tell the guard what you want and the second door opens to let you in... same to go out... I refused to bank there.

I hear in Michigan they have started hiring security to deal with security issues in stores.

This is just another of those things that have changed over the years. It's been 50 years since I had a moonlighting job in a big department store in downtown Dallas. Sometimes I worked in uniform in hopes of preventing shoplifting; other times I worked in plain clothes to catch shoplifters. And as far as I know, every retail establishment in Dallas was in favor of arresting and prosecuting all shoplifters.
